just wondering if there's anybody on here that goes to the UofC like I do.

What is your major? Im not in a biology major, so Im having a hard time figuring out what bio classes count towards prereq's

I'm a psychology major. I didn't do my prereq's here though, but I'm pretty sure you have to take Biology 241 and 243. What's your major?

Im in engineering. Hopefully I can keep a high GPA.

I emailed the biosci department and they told me to do this to complete bio requirements for med/dental

Biol 241 and biol 243 in the first year

Biol 311, 313 and biol 331 in the second year

Zool 461 and 463 in their third year

That surely cant be right. I should not have to take 7 bio courses...

WOW they are so wrong!

for the majority of dental schools the only bio classes you need is 241 and 243 and for some schools you will need to do BCEM 341 but that's it for bio.

this is from the ucalgary website, it outlines the required classes if you want to go to UofA:
Chemistry 201 and 203; Chemistry 351 and 353; one of Biochemistry 341 or 393; Physics 211 or 221 and 223; Biology 231 and 233 (this was posted in 2005 and these classes have changed to 241 and 243); Statistics 213; and English 240 or 202 or two of 231, 233, 235, 237, 239.

Also, if you want to do dentistry why did you decide to go into ENG? I haven;t taken any ENG classes but I hear that keeping a high GPA in ENG is way harder!

Im sure I will most likely be sticking with engineering after graduation, but I want to keep dentistry an open door for the future.

Oh, and the thing that Im confused about is how eng chem courses factor into those pre reqs. Like for ochem, engg's are supposed to take chem 357 (ochem for engineers). And if I take that, I cant take ochem 351 or 353. But I need 2 ochem courses...

They aren't right. You would actually have to take more.

Med school and dentistry are actually quite different in regards to prereqs. As far as I know, most med schools at least in Alberta don't have specific courses that they need as prereqs (Don't quote me on this, I've just been told this by other people and haven't looked at it myself)

Honestly, I don't think dentistry is a realistic backup plan if you are doing engineering, you would have to go out of your way to get the required prereqs. If you're going to U of C, I'm guessing you're a resident of Alberta. In which case, you would want to apply to U of A for dentistry since all the provinces in Canada give preference to residents of that province for admissions (usually at least 90-95% of seats will be saved for residents of the province where the university is located).

U of A has less prereqs than other dental schools in my opinion, but even then you are required to have 2 courses general chemistry, 2 Organic Chemistry, 2 intro bio, 2 physics, 2 english, 1 statistics, and 1 intro biochem (of which genetics is a prerequisite). Plus you have to write an entrance exam, worth 25% of your admission at the U of A and graded on a steep curve.

Like I said, unless you are already doing sciences in prep for another medical field, I think you would have to go out of your way to fulfill these requirements. Obviously you can do what you want but I wouldn't go to all the trouble if it's not something you are directly aiming for. Other med programs probably don't have strict prereqs, but dentistry does.

Actually med school and dent school have pretty much the sam prereqs it's just that more dental schools require biochem and more med schools require the english credits

Many people go to dent school with an eng degree and they are actually favoured....

There are 2 biochems at the UofC, one for bio majors and one for non-biomajors and only one requires genetics as a prerequisite. It doesn't matter which one you take.

most schools don't require a stats class but yes UofA does but luckily they aren't at all specific about which stats. there may be an engineering stats class that you have to take anyways

also, you don't have to finish all these prereq classes before you apply... th most important ones to do are the 2 bios and 2 gen chems because they will help you for the DAT

As for your Ochem, I'm pretty sure that the Eng Ochem will work you just need to get 6 credits of it with a lab, (usually when you take a class that makes it so you can't get credit for a different class, then those 2 classes have overlapping subject matter). If your Eng degree only requires that you take 1 class (3 cred) of Ochem it doesn't mean you can't take another higher level Ochem for those other 3 creditsIf you are unsure just email U of A and ask them. As far as bio classes go you just need to take Bio 241 and 243 that's it!

for 90% of dental schools in North America you just need this:
6 credits with lab of Bio
6 credits with lab of General Chem
6 credits with lab of Physics
6 credits with lab of Organic Chem (some only require 3)
and 3 credits of biochem (no lab required)
There are many that also require 6 credits of english but there are many that don't
and I'm pretty sure you already know about this entrance exam (DAT)
