Look good. Work hard. Ruthlessly take advantage of all opportunities to shine. This is a competition now.

Take the above with a grain of salt, especially the ruthlessness part. I know of people who decided very late in the game and were successful. I also had a one-on-one meeting with a program director trying to convince me to apply to plastics because the applicant pool at the time was "****" with too many disingenuous, ruthless types.
Be honest, don't be a prick, be yourself, and play the CaRMS game safely (ie: apply broadly and backup). That applies to all specialties. |

Don't be a prick (which for some people is surprisingly hard), bust your ass ALL THE TIME, have some decent knowledge (i.e. make sure you read) and make them like you.

Anyone have any idea how easy it is to get in without any research experience? Or how you go about gaining some if you have decided kind of late in the game that this is what you would like to do?
