Hi there,
I'm new to the boards, but I've been browsing and everyone seems really helpful and friendly, so I'm hoping some can help me. I'm a second year student at mac, and I've heard plenty of buzz about how first year isn't as heavily weighted in the gpa as second, and subsequent years. I was wondering if this was true, where I can get the resources to verify this, and if any one knows the actual weighing of courses, and marks for different schools? Or if anyone knows if Ontario schools calculate a science gpa and a non-science gpa. Thanks in advance! Lori-Anne |

Hi Lori-Anne,
Each school has a different method of calculating GPAs. All Ontario schools use the OMSAS converted grades; however, may weight different years differently. No Ontario schools calculate separate science and non-science GPAs. The most accurate and up-to-date information regarding GPA calculations is on the school websites. Below is a list of some of the Ontario schools: - McMaster: All courses weighted equally (including summer courses) no matter when taken - Toronto: Apply a weighting formula IF you have taken a minimum of 5.0 courses each year. If not, all courses weighting equally. - Western: Best 2 years with minimum 5.0 courses (no repeats) counted. Each year must be above the minimum cut-off. No other years considered. - Ottawa: Weights most recent years more heavily. - Northern: Same as Ottawa, but does not consider first year. Elaine |

A note about Toronto - the weighting formula is only applied if you have already completed 3 full years (ie. 5.0 credits/year) PRIOR to applying.

Queens looks at your most recent 2 years (completed prior to application time).
