I all
I was wondering if anyone knows when the invites will be coming out for MD/Phd program applicants? I keep getting these "crank" emails from the UofT faculty of medicine about how great the program is and why UofT is an international leader in medical research. Thats all great but I call these crank emails because everytime I get one, I start going crazy thinking its going to be an invite.....till I open it! Oh well guess I keep waiting, that Uoft she's such a teaser! Good Luck Dr. Feelgood |

I got my interview invitation from the MD/PhD office about a month ago. My interview is scheduled for this Friday.

I called UofT today wondering what was going on. The nice lady there told me that they go through applications in batches and that interviews will be offered up until the end of May. She also said that getting an interview is very good because they don't offer very many like Ottawa and Queen's. So if you have an interview...and you don't screw it up!...then chances are, your IN!! (unfortunately, I don't have one yet
) Good luck to all of you that do![]() |

If you get into the MD/PhD program do yourself a favour and drop the PhD portion once you've accepted your offer. The program really give you no advantage and you can linger in the PhD portion for years prior to coming back to finish your MD. I have an MSc and have some friends in 1st and 2nd year at UofT as well as some in the MD/PhD program... you get no credit for work you have done in grad school, you may re-enter the MD portion of the program to find you are paying tuition MUCH higher than when you started off (my friend was paying ~$4000 initially, he now has to ~$12,000).
It is a much better plan to do your MD first and then do a grad degree while being paid as a resident... a lot of people apply to this program because they think it is like a back-door into medicine... it definitely isn't since the applications are handled by two completely seperate committees... my friend knows a guy in second year who was apparently already in a PhD program at UofT and was rejected by the PhD committee but accepted to medicine (guess what he is doing now...) |

first off: the first batch of mdphd interviews were on march 1, one more batch to come at a later date. These applications are not reviewed randomly like the MD ones (since there are not nearly as many), so i'd expect the other interview date to coincide with the next MD interview weekend (late march i believe).
secondly: true, mdphd is definitely NOT a backdoor... separate applications for each part (and No, they don't give you any advantage on the MD part). However, I question the statement about the guy who was doing a PhD and got into medicine--acceptance would almost certainly be tied to finishing the current degree (as UT's policy goes...) |

apparently he had been wait-listed the year before and re-applied before enrolling in his PhD (deftly leaving it of his CV... nice huh?).
I am planning on doing the same thing if I don't get accepted this year as I don't feel like wasting a year. I think UofT's policy about having to finish your degree is crap... it's my life and if I want to go to med school instead of do research that should be my decision, they shouldn't worry about poaching researchers. This is assuming of course I am accepted on the basis of what I have already done... |
