Default Whoa.. didn't even see the reply.

Clipper: Hi. Sorry for the late reply. I never even noticed that you replied because I a bunch of stuff to do.. I even went firefighting in BC this summer.

Anyways, I heard South Africa has some agreement with Canada and their doctors can come up here with little to no problem... I could be mistaken though.

I already have a Bachelor's degree as I have graduated 2 years ago.
I didn't think of a career in medicine until early this year.

I just wrote the MCAT in April.
I've applied for the University of Sydney and at UBC.

The thing is I'm debating on whether or not I should get rejected by UBC a few times first before heading down under.

Default Clipper...

Hey Clipper. I'm a US citizen. Doing a medical degree in Oxford, can I get back into the US or am I stuck in the UK?

Thanks

I don't think you will get a reply from Clipper...this thread is almost 10yrs old. Lol

But anyhow, as an international student in the UK your chances of landing any high end residency are slim to none.

Hi, I'm a canadian high school student interested in applying for Cambridge pre-med/med school. What are the steps that I would I have to take. Is there any standardized test which would be required like MCAT/SAT/UCAT? Or would my diploma marks suffice?

Thanks a bunch!

Hi Canuck...
As of a few months ago they are allowing ALL STUDENTS, including internationals, to do the foundation years. Not sure if you meant something else.

Oxford usually accepts 1-2 international students a year out of 200+ applicants. Last year they accepted 1 student from 255 applicants (look it up on oxford medsci website). You are more likely to get into Harvard or Yale than Oxford Med as an international.

Cambridge is a little bit more lenient than Oxford. I believe 2 years ago they accepted 7 internationals from an unknown number of applicants (keep in mind you are competing with the best and brightest from all over the world). You can apply to 4 medical schools in the UK in one year. You need to apply through the UCAS system. You need to take the UKCAT in the summer before your application (its a test that you can take only once a year, its similar in many ways to an IQ test). You also for Cambridge need to take the BMAT which is a more typical knowledge based test. At the end, if invited you will need to prepare for the dreaded Oxbridge interview and will need to fly over to do that.

Its a lot harder to get into Oxbridge med or any UK med school for that matter than it sounds. At Oxbridge, anything non-med is much easier than med because the schools aren't subject to an international student cap from the GMC.

yeah, i know eh... i never really looked into american schools... i was more than competitive enough to get into at least a few ivey leagues, i suppose live and learn... but there are lots of funding resources available if you know where to look...haha, on a similar note i went into med because clinical psych was similarly competitive, life's little paradoxes eh
