Seems like an obsession of US schools to have "1 year of english" as a requirement. But say I took a 0.5credit ENG course fall 2007, and another 0.5credit ENG course sometime between summer 2008 - spring 2009, do you think it would count as 1 year? I wanted to ask here first before wasting my time emailing 20 US schools. Plus the standard full 1-year ENG courses at UTM look very intimidating to me (though if anyone has suggestions I'd greatly appreciate). Thanks

what a year of English means is that you must have 6 credits of English, or 2 courses of 3 credits. These credits are calculated by the # of class hours in a week of a given semester. 3 credits means 3 hours a week.
I hope that your 0.5 credits equals 3, and you are fine. You can take the prerequisites until you matriculate, so you have to have them complete by the time you start medical school. Be sure to indicate on AMCAS that you will be taking this course in the future. |

Thanks for the help guys
Yes mikkey, my half courses consist of 3 lecture hours each week.Alastriss here's what Ive found out in terms of english NYU requires "6 semester hours" (which definitely means 2 half courses are acceptable) new york medical college requires "2 semesters" (once again all good) To start I emailed Boston U, Northwestern U, Columbia U, waiting for replies Schools that accept Canadians & don't require English (last time I checked in May, anyway, don't get mad if it's changed): Indiana U, U of Chicago, U of Vermont, Dartmouth Medical School, Rosalind Franklin U, Albany Medical College (but that one "prefers" US citizens) not accepting Canadians UNLESS maybe the Canadian has had at least 1y of undergrad in a US school (incomplete list): University of Buffalo University of Rochester University of Michigan Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva (Bronx) Stony Brook (Long Island) ALL OHIO SCHOOLS University of Pennsylvania Temple University (Philadelphia) Drexel University (Philadelphia) Loyola University Chicago Rush University (Chicago) Southern Illinois University (Springfield) University of Illinois UMDNJ (Newark) Tufts University (Boston) University of Massachusetts Last edited by VTeight7 : 06-29-2007 at 12:37 PM. |

Im pretty sure that Wayne accepts Canadians and so does Pittsburgh. I think the OP meant that these schools don't accept you unless you have a year of english.

OK boston U emailed me back, 2 separate semesters of english are fine
As for the Canadian acceptance fiasco .. OK I checked the websites individually in May but I'm likely wrong. I guess SUNY, Wayne State, & Pittsburgh do accept Canadians. DeeDoc I meant English or no English, those schools won't accept Canadians unless MAYBE they've had a year of undergrad in the US. But I know most of us here have not had that. Sorry nevertheless I should have specified. As for U of Pennsylvania Madz25, Quote:
