MCCQE part II

Hello everyone

New to the system. I was wondering if one would get any pediatric cases on MCCQE part II. By the way, how is MCCQE II different from USMLE step II CS or is there any difference?

yes, you do get peds cases on LMCC2. Sorry... I took my USMLE 2 before they added a clinical component, so I can't comment on that. i don't remember the specifics of LMCC2, but there are some stations where you are specifically asked to examine a particular system, or take a history around a particular problem. Sometimes there will be a "probe" station where you might take the history from the patient, then answer a few written questions or look at an X-ray based on what you saw in the previous station. I didn't find time to be a problem. These are the cases I remember from my LMCC2:

1. Patient with decreased LOC, found to be bradycardic (HR 30). Manage. You do the ABCs, etc... find out that pt has an advance directive and doesn't want resuscitation... which is good to know because her GCS would indicate intubation, and she arrests later on in the station.

2. Physical exam of abdomen in pt with abdominal pain

3. Review 3 views of abdomen (supposed to be same pt as station 2)

4. Childhood diarrhea - which questions would you ask mom?

5. University student with anxiety issues - counsel

6. Woman with amenorrhea - take history

7. Kid with failure to thrive - take history. Grandma has concerns about abuse... turned into kind of an ethics station

8. Fever of unknown origin (as an IM resident, I giggled with glee when I saw this one )

9. Guy who was diving into a shallow pool, decreased LOC. Manage, which tests would you order, etc.

10. Examine shoulder

I think there may have been more stations, but this is all I can remember. Honestly, it is an EASY exam. you only need to know the basics, and not do anything dangerous. Nobody I know failed... I think the people who failed were mostly IMGs who may have had problems with English, or just been generally unfamiliar with the Canadian healthcare system/exams.

People who do a rotating year in PGY-1 should have NO trouble whatsoever with this exam. As an IM resident, I did have to briefly revisit my TO notes for gyne, peds, psych, and surgery... but note... it was a BRIEF revisit, and even that was probably overkill. Get your hands on as many old questions as possible, and if you freeze up in oral exams, practice talking yourself through the scenarios. Above that, not much in the way of studying is required.

Hi there,

Another good resource for part deux is "OSCE and Clinical Skills Handbook" by Katrina Hurley. She's a Canadian medical graduate (from Dalhousie?) and her book is filled with clinical scenarios and sample questions akin to those described above, i.e.,, found on step two.
