Default EC Question

What extent can your personal activities be counted as ECs? I have had to make the best of a few situations in the past year that have definately tried my character and taken considerable time and effort. They are also situations that I have had to show leadership and good decision making, but aren't exactly what I think of when I hear "EC."

For example, my husband is in the military. We were notified we were being posted across the country. This involves much packing, organizing and of course, all the fun that goes with transferring schools on my part. I probably spend upwards of 15 hours per week on things related to our move. It is significantly impacting my time and I would love if it could count for something!

Lastly, what about planning a wedding? Is that an EC too? I planned a spectacular wedding in 10 weeks. Thank you, military LOL

It's going to be something very hard to convey in an ABS style format, but definitely something you can bring up in an interview if it appropriate.

I agree entirely... while there is no rule saying you can't, the limitations of the system will make it just about impossible to convey enough information to make it look like more than just resume padding. I think that in an interview it can be used as context for why less volunteering etc was done... but because these things are generally seen as being done for yourself, it would definitely need more explanation than the ABS allows.

Unfortunately the whole system is poorly designed to allow context or clarification... but I imagine that to an extent that is intentional to make it easier to compare applicants.

These items are more about how you deal efficiently with life than being actual ECs per se. All candidates are assumed to carry on their lives appropriately and in their best interests and this is exactly what you do.

Try to plan a wedding for someone else. Once you've done it twice you can call yourself a wedding planner

And if you don't charge, it is volunteering - making others happy and lifting pressure burdens off their shoulders.
