yes , you need an F1....
if you're not a criminal it's guaranteed to you when you are admitted. You will get one at the border when you cross. You don't however need anything if you are a dual citizen |

You can also get a H1-B (I think that was what it was - it started with an "H", anyway) visa. I think that visa type is new (from NAFTA, I think) and only applies to Canadians. I forget now exactly what the difference is between the ?H1-B? and the F1. It has to do with how long you can stay down there after residency... Someone had a good description once on another site - I'll try and find it.
