That's absolutely incredible!! Congratulations Amoeba Joe!

I am sure there will be a lot of anxious maritimers hanging around their mailboxes this week! Are you living in NS, or in another province? In any event - well done...Dal must have seen many admirable qualities in you. All the best, and hope to join you!

Thanks everyone!
I am currently living/working in Halifax so the letter didn't have far to travel. I have an interview this Saturday at U of O but Dal is my first choice so I am not sure what I am going to do.
Kirsteen - it is chapette :)
NBsmurf - I think you may have been there the day of my interview so it is possible we have already met (I was the one licking the cream out of the centre of the oreos).

Congratulations again, you must be relieved! Are you going to keep working through the summer or take it off? Also, good luck with your Ottawa interview, if you end up going.

Conratulations - that's awesome! I have two questions for you

1. How long ago was your interview?

2. Are you going to go to your interview at U of O?

:)

amoeba joe
02-26-2003, 08:31 AM
Yes it was a great relief to get my letter so early... I still cannot believe it though. My interview was originally scheduled for Jan 25th but I never received the email so I didn't show up and they rescheduled me for Jan 31 with only 4 days notice!
I graduated in 2002 with a BScH and this year I am taking classes in sign language and working as a personal care worker for 2 adults with traumatic brain injuries. I also volunteer at the children's hospital in Halifax.

Beth - My best advice is to be yourself and have fun. I smiled and laughed a lot during my interview and my questions were focused almost exclusively on my essays, research, and current activities. I was fortunate to have very friendly interviewers. Also, don't be afraid to ask for clarification on any of their questions and avoid silences. I tried to pad all my answers with personal stories.

DonaldKaufman - I have decided not to interview at U of O. Dal is 100% my first choice so I will call U of O this morning and cancel and hopefully they can offer the invitation to someone else.

Oh, one more thing...

could you guys possibly post when you had your interviews, just in case they are reviewing them in the order they came in (after interview).

Now, take a big breath, and RELAX!! If I was in Halifax, I would have to get down to the Lower Deck for a few brews for sure. Here in Toronto, I may hit up the Duke of Argyle or the Granite if I get some good news.

I was interviewd January 31, so that seems pretty standard with what some of the others have been saying. The letter was dated February 19, so it went out last week...hmm.
Dal was the only school I applied to, so yeah, I'm accepting. :p

eJaya> I don't think my application was that stellar, but it was pretty balanced. I had a lot of arts courses in my undergrad and I did pretty well marks-wise. In the interview we had a little laugh about the somewhat self-flagellating tone of my essays. If I might be so cocky, I think I was pretty middle of the road and honest about myself, so I think that impressed them.

I phoned my parents and told them the news...I acted all sad on the phone and told them that Dal had sent me a letter covered with "frowny-face" stickers. They yelled at me to stop scaring them like that.

Good luck to everyone, and see you August 25th!

Thanks everyone! :)

I interviewed on Jan. 25th. I thought my interview was bad, so if you don't stress out too much if you think your interview wasn't great.

MD2006, I'm not sure where I'll end up. I would love to stay in Halifax, but some other programs might suit me better (I'm not too sure about how well the COPS curriculum would suit me).

Well, I hate to be the first one to put a damper on this parade of good news, but...I got rejected today. The letter was dated Feb. 19th, and my interview was Feb. 14th. I'm a bit surprised/disappointed/confused, because my interview went really well (or so I thought), my GPA is 4.03 on the Dal scale (Honours B.Sc. from Dal), MCATs BS 9, VR 10, PS 13, O, with a fair amount of volunteer experience. The really weird thing is that I applied 2 years ago to Dal, had a terrible interview, and was asked back for a 2nd interview (so at least at that point I was still being considered). I have an interview at Queen's later this month, so maybe that will pan out. Anyway, I'm sure this sounds like sour grapes to those who got accepted (it wasn't supposed to)..so congratulations to those of you who got in! Have fun at Dal!

Hey DonaldKaufman,

Im sorry to hear about your letter. It certainly put a damper on things... I thought DAL didn't send out rejection letters until much later. Can you think of any reason why they would have decided to quickly, because you certianly have the gpa/mcat.... :( *gulp* I still haven't heard anything, but I was hoping that a letter was good news.. unfortunately now I have to stress before I open the letter..

Well.. no news is good news...

Hi Donald,
I'm so sorry to hear the bad news, but thanks to you for posting it. I didn't think Dal would send out rejections right away and it seems as though your application/interview was great. Can you call to see why?I guess that leaves the rest of us Maritimers wondering whether or not to open any letters that may arrive.
Like Dalhopeful said "no news is good news"

Thanks to everyone for the condolences. I plan on calling tomorrow to try to find out the reasoning behind their decision. The only things I can think of that might have hurt my chances are (1) my current job has nothing to do with medicine or health care at all, and (2) I currently live in the USA (I was in the Maritime pool though - I lived in NS from birth to age 22). I'm pretty devastated, I really thought I had a great chance, and it seems like their decision was made within 5 days of my interview. Also, I'm not antisocial or anything - while my GPA is pretty high, I'm able to carry on a conversation (as I said, I thought my interview went very well)! So, everyone, beware the envelope in your mailbox....an early envelope is not necessarily a good thing, trust me!

Hey, guys, thanks for all of the sympathy, but I'm not completely dejected - I still have at least one (possibly two) more chance to get into medical school in the fall of 2003! For anyone else who gets rejected by Dal, my advice is to not expect much feedback from the school anytime soon. I called this morning and asked to discuss the reason(s) why I was not accepted, and I was told that Dr. Hughes won't be setting up meetings to talk with unsuccessful applicants until at least May. I really didn't want a meeting - maybe just a 3 minute telephone conversation (I currently live 1200km away from Dal), would have been sufficient. I'm stuck with only the vague form letter they sent me until then. I'm quite unimpressed with the aftermath of this whole thing, although I do understand that the Admissions Office does not have time converse with all of the 130-140 unsuccessful interviewees.
Alright, I am now finished discussing this - it's time to think positive thoughts!:)

Pleeeeeeeease don't take this the wrong way: it might have been a referree that determined your acceptance into Dal. I've been on committees and have seen too many reference letters that are *terrible* and I've known the people so I've been very confident that the comments were bogus. Someone once told me that is the norm--it is like writing a reference letter brings out the psycho in some people. There are specific profs that routinely give students horrid letters in my department--and this is regardless of the student's performance, potential, progress...they are just pigs, really.

Good luck with your other appl. Sometimes fate works in mysterious ways......

Thanks for the advice MD2006. I already had a bit of an idea that one of my reference letters wasn't as positive as I would have liked. It's pretty silly really - I'll still be the same person at this time next year, with all of the same qualifications! One other thing I learned this weekend is that my best academic referee, who wrote me a letter for my Dal application, is now on the admissions committee at Dal (they had to leave the room when my file came up) and won't be allowed to write a letter for me next year at Dal (if I don't get into an Ontario school this year)! Argh!

03-05-2003, 09:39 PM
Hi DalHopeful,
I contacted Tracey Teed and she said that they're meeting every two weeks and doing a bunch at a time until the end of July. I guess it's not like the two large waves they did last year (March and June). However, it seems to me that even if they do meet every two weeks, they should be able to get through all of the applications way before July. Who knows. This waiting is driving me crazy. I know the mailman by name now!

Guess whoz Bizzak
03-06-2003, 11:58 AM
Does anyone know if it has been 2 weeks since the last batch of applications were reviewed?? I think it was posted on Feb 24th that the first acceptance was received. Figure it must have been mailed 2 days before that, and probably decided upon the week before that. That means they are probably reviewing applications this week, and sending things out maybe today or tomorrow. Some of us should hear some news come Monday. Hopefully it is all positive!!

~JZ

DalHopeful
03-06-2003, 12:14 PM
Not that im tracking the days or anything.. but if the first wave of letters were dated feb 19th, then they must have met on the 18th or 17th.. So two weeks from that would be march 3/4. SOOOO.. If this reasoning holds up, they (and by they I mean those lucky ones who will get a letter) should hear late this week, or early next week.

Well... good luck.

Hey everyone,
My letter was dated Feb 19 but I had until March 12th to put down a deposit on my spot. I am thinking that they may not send out the next letters until after March 12 because then they'll know how many of the Feb 19th people are accepting the offer. This is just a guess.

My wife had her interview in early January in the year she was accepted and she didn't hear until early June.

It was a royal pain and by that point wasn't expecting the thick envelope. As long as your PFO letter hasn't arrived, you're still in the game.

What was really funny was when she (and several other classmates) finally got her PFO letter from UofT. It was funny, because they were into their five week of anatomy when the letter(s) arrived. :b

I called the admissions office today to give a change of address (they are completely sick of me by now, and are I'm sure considering blocking my phone calls), and asked Tracy Teed when the letters for non-maritimers would be sent out, adn she said they should be out by the end of the month... maybe that's why the maritimers aren't getting anything this month...
