View Full Version : I GOT IN!
02-24-2003, 11:32 PM
I am still in shock! I received my acceptance letter from Dal this afternoon! It arrived in a thin white envelop. Things are happening so good luck to everyone waiting and hope to see you guys in August!
02-24-2003, 11:39 PM
Wow, so early!
02-25-2003, 12:40 AM
Congrats Amoeba!!! :hat
Any plans for the summer now that you're accepted?
Looking forward to meeting you and the rest of the 2007 class in August. :D
02-25-2003, 01:01 AM
Nice!! Congrats, Amoeba!!
I never knew any school in Canada sent out letters of acceptance this early!
02-25-2003, 06:03 AM
Sweet! Can't wait to meet you in August!
02-25-2003, 07:18 AM
Wow, that's great!
You are one lucky chap/chapette there, not having to wait agonizing months and months and months. Yay you and yay Dal for being so progressive! Enjoy the moment!
02-25-2003, 08:12 AM
Hi amoeba joe!
Guess whoz Bizzak
02-25-2003, 10:23 AM
That's absolutely incredible!! Congratulations Amoeba Joe!
I am sure there will be a lot of anxious maritimers hanging around their mailboxes this week! Are you living in NS, or in another province? In any event - well done...Dal must have seen many admirable qualities in you. All the best, and hope to join you!
02-25-2003, 10:54 AM
I am currently living/working in Halifax so the letter didn't have far to travel. I have an interview this Saturday at U of O but Dal is my first choice so I am not sure what I am going to do.
Kirsteen - it is chapette :)
NBsmurf - I think you may have been there the day of my interview so it is possible we have already met (I was the one licking the cream out of the centre of the oreos).
02-25-2003, 11:25 AM
Ah, I know who you are ;) Somehow I ended up with your oreos while you were interviewing. :b
Congratulations again, you must be relieved! Are you going to keep working through the summer or take it off? Also, good luck with your Ottawa interview, if you end up going.
CONGRATULATIONS Amoeba!! What amazing news (especially since it is so early).
I am interviewing at Dalhousie next weekend.....any advice?? (your interview obviously went really well).
Thanks and congrats again :)
02-25-2003, 04:25 PM
Wow, that's awesome amoeba joe! I had no idea they accepted some people this early. That must be a great relief!
02-25-2003, 05:25 PM
Congrats amoeba joe!! WAY TO GO!!!
What a relief not to have to wait. So what is your background, if you feel like sharing... If not, we understand.
Congrats again, Mimi :rollin
02-25-2003, 06:49 PM
...*checking mail box*...:rolleyes
Oh yeah, congrats..:) When was your letter dated?
02-25-2003, 07:31 PM
Welcome to Dal meds, Amoeba joe!! Looking forward to meeting you (and your class) in August.
02-25-2003, 08:14 PM
Conratulations - that's awesome! I have two questions for you
1. How long ago was your interview?
2. Are you going to go to your interview at U of O?
02-26-2003, 08:31 AM
Yes it was a great relief to get my letter so early... I still cannot believe it though. My interview was originally scheduled for Jan 25th but I never received the email so I didn't show up and they rescheduled me for Jan 31 with only 4 days notice!
I graduated in 2002 with a BScH and this year I am taking classes in sign language and working as a personal care worker for 2 adults with traumatic brain injuries. I also volunteer at the children's hospital in Halifax.
Beth - My best advice is to be yourself and have fun. I smiled and laughed a lot during my interview and my questions were focused almost exclusively on my essays, research, and current activities. I was fortunate to have very friendly interviewers. Also, don't be afraid to ask for clarification on any of their questions and avoid silences. I tried to pad all my answers with personal stories.
DonaldKaufman - I have decided not to interview at U of O. Dal is 100% my first choice so I will call U of O this morning and cancel and hopefully they can offer the invitation to someone else.
Amoeba joe - thanks for the advice and congratulations again on being accepted!
02-27-2003, 02:04 PM
...I got my acceptance letter this afternoon, too. It says it's contingent on me finishing the work for my Master's, but there you go.
Has anyone else heard? I'm looking forward to meeting everyone in August...
02-27-2003, 02:39 PM
I also got my acceptance letter today... I still can't believe it!
Congrats and good luck to everybody else!
02-27-2003, 02:40 PM
Congratulations Whitbourne! You must be soooo happy! Aren't you at Queen's? That was a quick decision on Dal's part! You must've had a stellar application.
02-27-2003, 02:42 PM
Congrats to you too BCgirl!
That is so exciting that people are hearing this early!!!
now you get to relax!!!:b
Guess whoz Bizzak
02-27-2003, 02:58 PM
I am so happy for all of you with acceptances in hand...CONGRATULATIONS from me :)
Man, I usually go to the gym after work, and don't home till around 10pm or so, but I am so anxious I think I may just go home after work to check the mail. Hopefully good news awaits more of us this evening and tomorrow.
Guess whoz Bizzak
02-27-2003, 03:27 PM
Oh, one more thing...
could you guys possibly post when you had your interviews, just in case they are reviewing them in the order they came in (after interview).
Now, take a big breath, and RELAX!! If I was in Halifax, I would have to get down to the Lower Deck for a few brews for sure. Here in Toronto, I may hit up the Duke of Argyle or the Granite if I get some good news.
02-27-2003, 03:50 PM
WHOOOOHOOOO! Great job guys! Are you both accepting Dal's offers? Hope to see y'all in August;)
02-27-2003, 03:56 PM
I was interviewd January 31, so that seems pretty standard with what some of the others have been saying. The letter was dated February 19, so it went out last week...hmm.
Dal was the only school I applied to, so yeah, I'm accepting. :p
eJaya> I don't think my application was that stellar, but it was pretty balanced. I had a lot of arts courses in my undergrad and I did pretty well marks-wise. In the interview we had a little laugh about the somewhat self-flagellating tone of my essays. If I might be so cocky, I think I was pretty middle of the road and honest about myself, so I think that impressed them.
I phoned my parents and told them the news...I acted all sad on the phone and told them that Dal had sent me a letter covered with "frowny-face" stickers. They yelled at me to stop scaring them like that.
Good luck to everyone, and see you August 25th!
02-27-2003, 04:20 PM
Thanks everyone! :)
I interviewed on Jan. 25th. I thought my interview was bad, so if you don't stress out too much if you think your interview wasn't great.
MD2006, I'm not sure where I'll end up. I would love to stay in Halifax, but some other programs might suit me better (I'm not too sure about how well the COPS curriculum would suit me).
02-27-2003, 05:07 PM
Well, I hate to be the first one to put a damper on this parade of good news, but...I got rejected today. The letter was dated Feb. 19th, and my interview was Feb. 14th. I'm a bit surprised/disappointed/confused, because my interview went really well (or so I thought), my GPA is 4.03 on the Dal scale (Honours B.Sc. from Dal), MCATs BS 9, VR 10, PS 13, O, with a fair amount of volunteer experience. The really weird thing is that I applied 2 years ago to Dal, had a terrible interview, and was asked back for a 2nd interview (so at least at that point I was still being considered). I have an interview at Queen's later this month, so maybe that will pan out. Anyway, I'm sure this sounds like sour grapes to those who got accepted (it wasn't supposed to)..so congratulations to those of you who got in! Have fun at Dal!
02-27-2003, 05:33 PM
Im sorry to hear about your letter. It certainly put a damper on things... I thought DAL didn't send out rejection letters until much later. Can you think of any reason why they would have decided to quickly, because you certianly have the gpa/mcat.... :( *gulp* I still haven't heard anything, but I was hoping that a letter was good news.. unfortunately now I have to stress before I open the letter..
Well.. no news is good news...
02-27-2003, 05:52 PM
I'm so sorry to hear the bad news, but thanks to you for posting it. I didn't think Dal would send out rejections right away and it seems as though your application/interview was great. Can you call to see why?I guess that leaves the rest of us Maritimers wondering whether or not to open any letters that may arrive.
Like Dalhopeful said "no news is good news"
02-27-2003, 06:07 PM
Not to be redundant....
But Congrats to all those accepted already:eek
and sympathies to a one Donald Kaufman; you had great marks, so it is a bit surprising.
02-27-2003, 08:55 PM
Thanks to everyone for the condolences. I plan on calling tomorrow to try to find out the reasoning behind their decision. The only things I can think of that might have hurt my chances are (1) my current job has nothing to do with medicine or health care at all, and (2) I currently live in the USA (I was in the Maritime pool though - I lived in NS from birth to age 22). I'm pretty devastated, I really thought I had a great chance, and it seems like their decision was made within 5 days of my interview. Also, I'm not antisocial or anything - while my GPA is pretty high, I'm able to carry on a conversation (as I said, I thought my interview went very well)! So, everyone, beware the envelope in your mailbox....an early envelope is not necessarily a good thing, trust me!
02-27-2003, 10:36 PM
DonaldK: Don't lose hope, you probably will have a good chance at Queens' then. Look at how many many last year were offered before they can make up a class!;)
02-28-2003, 12:22 AM
DonaldKaufman> I'm at Queen's right now, and it's a really good school. Lots of friendly people there. I hope you have the best of luck. Sorry that things didn't turn out the way you wanted from Dal.
02-28-2003, 09:16 AM
Hey, guys, thanks for all of the sympathy, but I'm not completely dejected - I still have at least one (possibly two) more chance to get into medical school in the fall of 2003! For anyone else who gets rejected by Dal, my advice is to not expect much feedback from the school anytime soon. I called this morning and asked to discuss the reason(s) why I was not accepted, and I was told that Dr. Hughes won't be setting up meetings to talk with unsuccessful applicants until at least May. I really didn't want a meeting - maybe just a 3 minute telephone conversation (I currently live 1200km away from Dal), would have been sufficient. I'm stuck with only the vague form letter they sent me until then. I'm quite unimpressed with the aftermath of this whole thing, although I do understand that the Admissions Office does not have time converse with all of the 130-140 unsuccessful interviewees.
Alright, I am now finished discussing this - it's time to think positive thoughts!:)
02-28-2003, 12:54 PM
Pleeeeeeeease don't take this the wrong way: it might have been a referree that determined your acceptance into Dal. I've been on committees and have seen too many reference letters that are *terrible* and I've known the people so I've been very confident that the comments were bogus. Someone once told me that is the norm--it is like writing a reference letter brings out the psycho in some people. There are specific profs that routinely give students horrid letters in my department--and this is regardless of the student's performance, potential, progress...they are just pigs, really.
Good luck with your other appl. Sometimes fate works in mysterious ways......
03-01-2003, 10:18 PM
It's been a few days since I checked the board out so I'm a bit behind on my congratulations--but a big set of BRAVOS to you guys who received the brilliant news. Way to go BCgirl--brilliant stuff and nice not to have a UBC-peat, eh?!
03-02-2003, 01:54 PM
Congrats BC girl. . . I know you'll love Dal.
03-02-2003, 09:08 PM
Thanks for the advice MD2006. I already had a bit of an idea that one of my reference letters wasn't as positive as I would have liked. It's pretty silly really - I'll still be the same person at this time next year, with all of the same qualifications! One other thing I learned this weekend is that my best academic referee, who wrote me a letter for my Dal application, is now on the admissions committee at Dal (they had to leave the room when my file came up) and won't be allowed to write a letter for me next year at Dal (if I don't get into an Ontario school this year)! Argh!
03-03-2003, 09:03 PM
Thanks Kirsteen! Yeah, it's definitely nice not the repeat my UBC experience!
Good luck with everything :) I've got my fingers crossed for you!
03-05-2003, 07:05 PM
Dum de dum de dum..... (twiddling thumbs as time passes) :rolleyes
03-05-2003, 07:58 PM
I know the feeling....
03-05-2003, 09:03 PM
Has anyone heard anything since the first wave of letters? One of the moderators mentioned that they were meeting everyweek and sending them out as they go... Is it every two weeks?
03-05-2003, 09:39 PM
I contacted Tracey Teed and she said that they're meeting every two weeks and doing a bunch at a time until the end of July. I guess it's not like the two large waves they did last year (March and June). However, it seems to me that even if they do meet every two weeks, they should be able to get through all of the applications way before July. Who knows. This waiting is driving me crazy. I know the mailman by name now!
Guess whoz Bizzak
03-06-2003, 11:58 AM
Does anyone know if it has been 2 weeks since the last batch of applications were reviewed?? I think it was posted on Feb 24th that the first acceptance was received. Figure it must have been mailed 2 days before that, and probably decided upon the week before that. That means they are probably reviewing applications this week, and sending things out maybe today or tomorrow. Some of us should hear some news come Monday. Hopefully it is all positive!!
03-06-2003, 12:14 PM
Not that im tracking the days or anything.. but if the first wave of letters were dated feb 19th, then they must have met on the 18th or 17th.. So two weeks from that would be march 3/4. SOOOO.. If this reasoning holds up, they (and by they I mean those lucky ones who will get a letter) should hear late this week, or early next week.
Well... good luck.
03-06-2003, 06:13 PM
That sounds about right to me :)
03-11-2003, 11:04 AM
My letter was dated Feb 19 but I had until March 12th to put down a deposit on my spot. I am thinking that they may not send out the next letters until after March 12 because then they'll know how many of the Feb 19th people are accepting the offer. This is just a guess.
has anyone heard anything from dal yet? it's been quite awhile since the first set of letters went out.
03-23-2003, 10:17 PM
03-30-2003, 04:21 PM
I just thought I would let whoever still reads this know that I have been hearing about more and more people getting in. Along with some rejections.
But alas, I have still not heard.
03-31-2003, 09:31 AM
Still haven't heard a thing either.....:o
03-31-2003, 10:40 AM
Don't worry. . . I think Dal sends their invites out in batches, and continues to almost throughout the summer. A friend of mine now in 3rd year didn't receive his acceptance until late July when he applied. I know the wait sucks, but don't let the fact you haven't heard anything worry you.
Guess whoz Bizzak
03-31-2003, 11:00 AM
Thanks for posting that people are still hearing 'yeah' and 'ney' from Dal as we sit here and continue to wait. Just a quick question. Any idea when these people interviewed?? It's been almost 2 months now since I interviewed, and needless to say, I am a little anxious. Ah well, continue to stay positive everyone, and good luck :)
03-31-2003, 11:00 AM
Thanks WOMED2005! I guess we all know that, but when you hear that others are getting accepted...it makes the wait even tougher.
Thanks for the info too though DalHopeful. I am "hopeful" that you get in too. ;)
03-31-2003, 05:55 PM
I had my interview on Valentine's day and I still, like many of you, have not heard from Dal. Congrads to those of you who have!!:)
03-31-2003, 06:46 PM
I still haven't heard! Thanks for the info though Dalhopeful. Good luck to the rest of you still waiting!
03-31-2003, 10:03 PM
My wife had her interview in early January in the year she was accepted and she didn't hear until early June.
It was a royal pain and by that point wasn't expecting the thick envelope. As long as your PFO letter hasn't arrived, you're still in the game.
What was really funny was when she (and several other classmates) finally got her PFO letter from UofT. It was funny, because they were into their five week of anatomy when the letter(s) arrived. :b
03-31-2003, 10:39 PM
Hey guys, sorry but I haven't heard anything else about letters being sent out, I'll let you know as soon as I do!
04-07-2003, 03:09 PM
I got my rejection letter from MUN today. I'm not even on the waiting list there, but I suppose that they only have 3-4 spots for us OOP(non NBer or PEIer). I'm still patiently waiting for Dal to send it's letter while hoping that it has better news than MUN did. eJaya, have you heard yet?
Best of luck all,
04-07-2003, 06:58 PM
Nice to see you back here! Sorry to hear about your MUN news- I'm sure it was stiff competition for such few spots. :\
I haven't heard from Dal yet. I was stalking the postman for a couple of weeks after the first few people heard but I'm not anymore. I do get a small twinge of anticipation when I open the mailbox each day though!
Hopefully we'll hear soon and it'll be good news all around.
04-15-2003, 01:11 PM
I was talking to Tracy at Admissions today to give her an address change and she let me know that there will not be any letters sent for the entire month of April for different reasons. She said it doesn't mean anything so don't panic. I just wanted to give ya'll a heads up so that you don't worry about no letter for this month.
04-15-2003, 01:20 PM
Thanks so much for that info Ben. Now we can just relax a bit and try to forget about the mailman for a while.
Cheers, Mimi :p
I kinda wondered if maybe things would be stalled a little after the news about additional seats...preparation for next year's class, etc..wonder if this in one of the reasons???
definitely good news..I was thinking I was going to get a letter in June saying...too bad :-) I actually had a dream the other night of getting my rejection letter with the stats of the ad comm...that 3 people said yes to me, and 135 said no :-) I mean I know there is tough competition, but am I really that bad??? :lol
cheers...and here's to good news in May
do you think this means the oop letters won't be sent in april either?
04-16-2003, 10:22 AM
Thanks for the info Ben. It'll be nice to relax a bit more this month.
04-17-2003, 12:23 AM
I called the admissions office today to give a change of address (they are completely sick of me by now, and are I'm sure considering blocking my phone calls), and asked Tracy Teed when the letters for non-maritimers would be sent out, adn she said they should be out by the end of the month... maybe that's why the maritimers aren't getting anything this month...
thanks for the info blackbird. I tried to call yesterday and got her answering machine, so I am glad that you through. hopefully next week we will get something in the mail (and hopefully it is good news).
04-23-2003, 09:02 PM
I saw the list of people who have been accepted to dal (and paid their deposit).
The list was 40 names long (3 were grad students).
Still plenty of space.... hhhhhh (airway constricting)...:o
Thought someone might want to know.
