Hi

I am really confused as to how doctors get paid in specialties. I understand that family physicians are paid through billings when they see patients in their private practice, but what if your a surgeon, do you just work at the hospital as an employee? Also what about neurologists and cardiologists, do they have their own private practices or do they just work in hospitals, and if so how are they paid? Thanks alot

I apologize if this is a dumb question! Thanks again

Stephan

Here's an old thread regarding this particular question. I think I'm also going to move this to the CaRMS, Residency, and Beyond forum.

The bottom line is that most specialists are NOT salaried, and bill the government just like family doctors, only they bill for different things (ie. a gall bladder surgery) and different amounts of money (each procedure can be billed for a certain amount of money, that has been negotiatied as fair for the amount of time and skill needed).
