Just wanted to start a thread for DAL applicants, where it seems most posts are Ontario focused and it's not easy to sift through to find Dal specific posts. If anyone knows much about DAL PT or OT, just share :) Things such as how competitive it is to get in, what's the school's reputation nationally, what are the stats of entering classes, when letters/notifications come out, etc.

I'm in the same boat. They seem a little old-school (no pun intended, but I'm gonna roll with it) and I haven't been able to dig up too much information.
I'm applying from BC and I'm curious how many applications they get from outside the Atlantic provinces.

when i emailed them they told me that they couldnt tell me the cutoffs for out of province students, but they also said they get more applicants from OOP than they do in their other applicant pool, which is insaannnne for only 5 spots:eek:

Jeebus. I hope that just means they don't get too many Atlantic applications.

Does anyone know roughly the cutoffs for maritime students. My gpa was about 3.75 on the 4.3 scale, hoping for an interview for PT.

On their website they say a minimum GPA of 3.0 is needed to apply, but I realize that is probably not the cutoff (although that would be nice :) ). They also say on their web page that "in principle, all applicants from the Atlantic provinces whose applications are complete will be offered an interview. In the event that this is not administratively possible, the Admissions committee will rank applicants by GPA on most recent 60credit hours to make the interview offers". Minimum of 112 interviews will be offered.

I just need to be in the top of my province I suppose. A prof of mine said that the average of most PT who got accepted is around 85% usually.

I finally got an email notification that they received my package, nearly a month after it was sent.
Does anybody have information re: exactly how many applications they got last year from elsewhere in Canada and what that GPA cutoff was?

I only just received an email yesterday for OT and have yet to hear from Dal about physiotherapy. I sent my applications around the same time a month ago as well.

Smorgasbord, what province are you from, if you don't mind my asking? I'm an NL applicant.

I believe that the seat designations (16 for NS, 15 for NB, 10 for NL, and 2 for PEI) are the minimums. The remaining 13 seats could be all NS or all PEI etc if that's where the best applicants are. Only a maximum of 5 could go to persons living outside the atlantic provinces, so that means at least 8 more seats are open to Atlantic students. At least that's my interpretation of what the web site says.

So it's 5 undesignated spots for PT but 25 for OT? Seems unfair but I'm glad I'm applying for OT!

I also (finally) got an email regarding physiotherapy. They just said they received my application and that it is complete. I am also wondering when they notify about interviews...

Just browsing the School of Physiotherapy's website (yet again) and I noticed that they say that the interviews will be conducted between April 21st and 28th this year. Just thought I'd pass on that bit of information if anyone didn't see it.

I applied to Dal OT, I'm from the Maritimes so it is probably my best chance of getting accepted because they set aside specific seats for residents, although it's not one of my top choices at all.

Anyone know when we'll get interview times for PT?

A friend of mine in her second year of PT said notices for interviews went out at the end of March when she went through the process.

If you don't mind my asking, why isn't Dal one of your top choices? I'm just wondering because I have heard very little about their program (and as for OT schools it's my best chance as well, where I'm from Atlantic Canada).
Also, for everyone wondering when we'll find out, I found their facebook page through the school's home page, and a post said that the first acceptance letters for MSc(OT) entry level are going out by April 30.

Labrador11,
Some of it is for personal reasons. I've also done my undergrad in Nova Scotia, not too far from Halifax, and I've seen a lot of the city over the years. I'm looking for a big change.
As well, in my opinion, the jobs and fieldwork placements, research opportunities etc are not nearly as varied or as interesting out here on the east coast as they would be in a bigger city, say Toronto, Vancouver or Edmonton. Since I figure I'd have to move to a bigger city to find the better job opportunities anyways I figure I'd rather do my education in a big center and get settled as I get my MSc.
The department at Dal seems really tiny too. I'm sure it's not a bad school, I just don't think for me it'd be the best fit.

anybody here from dalhousie today? I got a message back saying i didnt meet the GPA requirement for an interview, my GPA was 3.87 on the dal scale

Sorry to hear that, pthopeful15.
I also heard from Dal PT today through email :) I did get invited for an interview. The NL interviews are the 24th and 25th. They asked me to confirm that I would attend by Monday (I replied immediately) and they would contact me with an exact time later.
They also said that the interviews would be scenario based and last 20-30 min.
I wonder if anyone has any more information on what the interviews will be like? (i.e. knows someone who has done it before or have done one themselves)

Do you mind stating your sGPA? I thought 3.87 might have been high enough to get an interview, although I am from Ontario and there are only a limited number of spots available to OPP/non-atlantic applicants

For Dal (4.3 scale) my GPA for the last 20 credit hours was 3.89. There are 10 seats designated for NL students, so perhaps that's why I did get an interview.

I also got an email with a 3.76 gpa from NS. 3.89 is easily high enough to get you in Labrador. Can't believe a 3.87 gpa didn't get you an interview. Anyone know roughly the cutoffs of in province successful applicants?

Thanks, Smorgasbord, and I hope you're right!
As for Atlantic cut-offs, I don't know about NS, but I know of someone who was accepted with a 3.6-something from NL two years ago, and one with a 3.7-something from NB last year, both from MUN's BKin program.
Any idea what the interview will be like? (I've sent messages to these two but haven't heard anything back yet).

I got an interview in NB and was wondering how it'll all work out. they said the interview would only last 20-30 minutes and to me, that seems awfully short. Does anyone know how/what the scenarios are like, do they pertain to PT or are they just every day, run of the mill type problems that we'll have to work through. I also have an interview at UofT but am hoping to stay in the Maritimes!

So I heard back from someone regarding Dal PT interviews, but they only gave me one example. They said the questions are "would you do" type scenarios. The example was that "you're assessing someone whose family member is a doctor and they contradict everything you say (or something like that). what would you do/say to them?"
Basically from what I can gather they are literally 'gauge your personality' questions... can't really prep for them. Has anyone else heard anything?

Hope everyone's interviews went well this week!
Does anyone know whether DAL determines GPA after the interview by looking at the last 60ch or if they look at your overall GPA. Their website says:
"In principle, all applicants from the Atlantic Provinces whose applications are complete will be offered an interview. In the event that this is not administratively possible, the Admissions Committee will rank applicants by GPA based on the most recent 60 credit hours to make the interview offers. At a minimum, 112 interviews will be offered."
and then it goes onto say:
"Offers are based on the combined score of 25% interview and 75% GPA."
Am I wrong to assume that it is still the sub-gpa they would be looking at?

I'd also like to wait to hear about physiotherapy before making any final decisions... I wonder is there a date we must confirm by? One wasn't mentioned in the letter.

I read on their website somewhere that we had three weeks. I think that's after we get the official approval letter from the graduate studies faculty though. I know that last year the PT students herd on the 16th!

I got an acceptance letter for OT as well. I'm a bit confused by the e-mail though, does this mean we're accepted or is there still a chance they'll boot us out since it's only a "recommendation" for acceptance?? I'm an out of province applicant so I'm always wary about my chances being lower than in-province applicants.

I suppose there's a 'chance', but the approval by the Faculty of Graduate Studies is usually just a formality. Unless the OT admissions overlooked something, the recommendations go through. I'm considering it an acceptance.

Anyone going to Dal for OT looking for a room mate? I'll be starting the program this fall and will be moving to Halifax from Calgary so I was hoping to cut down on my expenses by trying to find a room mate. If anyone is interested please let me know! :)
