Hi all, I am looking for your oppinions on the fact that McGill Medicine does not require MCAT for admission. Do you consider that a pro or cons? Will it be harder or easier relatively?

I think without the MCAT, the barrier for GPA will be much higher. Which is a cons for students who get a bad year, but push themselves in later semsesters, and want to prove themselves with the MCAT :)

Well it would have been an advantage if I was a quebec resident... like who doesn't hate the mcat.

I feel that its a disadvantage...the two schools that don't require the MCAT (Ottawa and McGill) have really high GPA cutoffs...that really hurts those who mess up on a few courses.....we all hate the MCAT but it can be rewritten if you do bad but a bad/weak GPA can not be fixed to meet those high cutoffs (IMO).

If you have a high GPA with pre-reqs, try for McGill

If you live in Quebec -> go to McGill

If you have not taken the MCAT and have high GPA -> go to McGill

If you have taken the MCAT and high GPA -> go to McGill.

If you do not have any of the above, I don't think you should try. GPA cutoff too high ATM...writing the MCAT can open more doors.

there are Universite de Montreal, and Laval, which do not require MCAT; however, they are French school, and I am totally clueless about French :( Well, i can speak, read news in French, but not comfortable studying in French

You would really be surprised at how quickly you become very comfortable in another language when you go to school in that language. French is my first language, but I was already fluent in English when I started my undergrad at McGill. I did have some friends however that were like you (except reverse), and after a month or 2 everything was going great for them.

I should add... even though English is my 2nd language and I studied for years in French after McGill, I still think in English very often, and I still find it easier to write and read in English than French.

No MCAT required = basic science grades should be good, else, you should take the MCAT.
