I did my undergrad in Ontario, but I want to go to Alberta for med school. If I get into U of C, I have two questions:

1. I know you don't have to pay back OSAP as long as your in school, is this just ontario schools or all schools?

2. If I move to Alberta for med school, can I apply for more OSAP (my permanent residence is still in Ontario) or should I apply for Alberta student loans, since my school will be in Alberta.

If anyone left Ontario to another province for meds, please let me know your experience. Thanks

If you've never lived in Alberta, you will be applying to OSAP.

I don't know if this is for all provinces (I had to work this out between NS student loans and OSAP), but for me it came down to where I last lived for 12 consecutive months while not in university (undergrad or otherwise).

You need to pay back OSAP loans while a resident.

The only way out of it is if you sign a ROS whereby the ON govt. covers each year of payments in exchange for a year of service in ON (and this may exclude the Toronto and Ottawa areas, I'm not too sure).

It's a TERRIBLE deal unless you are 100% sure you will want and be able to work in Ontario when you are done.

I plan doing family medicine in Northern Ontario so that might not be a bad idea. Not planning on solidifying anything cause those plans can change once I'm actually exposed to most of the specialties
