View Full Version : Applicant numbers this year
I noticed on the admissions blog that they said just under 1200 applications were received this year. Am I mistaken or is this SIGNIFICANTLY lower than previous years? Thoughts? Far less OOP applicants this year?

I was under the impression that there were typically ~1000 OOP applicants per year (although this info was from another premed, not their website so I have NO idea if it is accurate). So that would be crazy to have the number drop that dramatically.

I made the GPA/MCAT OOP cut, any idea how many OOP applicants survive that first cut ??
From the blog "We are going to have 644 interview slots this year, after having completed 1192 file reviews. "
So my mistake. 1200 FILE REVIEWS. So probably about 950 IP and 250 OOP apps that made it past the initial screening.

I was OOP applying last year, and its between 200-250 OOP that make the first cut. I think about 100 get invited for interview. So whether your IP of OOP the chances of getting an interview if you had a file review are about 1 in 2...but thats only if they were drawing randomly which of course they arent :)

Hmm, that's pretty decent odds... I'd love to interview there! But there are only like 25 spots for OOP, right?

85% of seats are reserved for Albertans. There are about 170 seats in the program so ya, only about 25 spots max for OOP. The file review cutoff score for OOP is typically in the low-mid seventies, whereas IP is mid-high sixties....big swing.

yikes, well I will do what I can to not get my hopes up.... but I can't promise anything, ahah!

Good thing is, if you do get an interview, you're basically only competing against the other roughly 100 OOP people that got invites...so about a 1 in 4 chance of an offer...just rock out the interview.

well it's not really a 1/4 CHANCE. It's "you only have to be in the top 25%"

you can see a breakdown of last years applications here:
https://breeze.ucalgary.ca/adm2013/
924 OOP apps, 250 made it to file review, 127 were interviewed, given the lowest person offered admission was 67.48 post interview, it looks like ~2/3s of those interviewed got an offer at some point.
891 IP apps, 517 interviewed, 67.26 was the last person offered admission, so ~1/2 of those people were offered a spot eventually.

From the blog:
"We are going to have 644 interview slots this year, after having completed 1192 file reviews. "
"We reviewed 200 OOP files, so 17% of the total files were OOP, which is in keeping with the maximum allotment of 15% of seats for OOP applicants."

Wait, are you serious? about 40-50% of the IP people that were interviewed will be accepted? is that still true for this year?
Beats NOSOM's practice of interviewing 400 ppl for 64 spots.... I guess

It's more like 33%. Still pretty good though

Those were the numbers from last years apps, it could change every year of course... but its a rough estimate. I love that they posted the presentation, transparency in this crazy process is a nice thing :)

Typically, the list moves down quite a bit (for OOP) so I think if you are in the middle third of the 100 OOP applicants, you're in good position to get in off the waitlist at some point.

I know they say at minimum , 85% of seats are reserved for IP students. Does that mean it might be more than 85% depending on the IP applicant pool? I couldn't find how many IP are actually offered seats per year, they just lump IP and OPP stats together for each class...

I sincerely hope not.

What if they move through the entire OOP waitlist and still have spots left over? They would fill them with IP people and end up with a class that greater than 85% IP.
