Same here. I don't see why they're making us wait until Monday to get our score. I'd like to see how close I was to the cutoff.

EDIT- just calculated my own score based on their algorithm. 450.80. Damn.

62.517 (gpa) + 12.122 (mcat,vr) + 6.757(mcat,bs)

That seems consistent with what it was last year, I believe. Plus, the general consensus around pm101 was that you needed to have above a 451 to be competitive for an OOP.

True true. I didn't really have my hopes up too high for that very reason. Still sucks though.

rejected here as well with score ~445. I didn't hold much hope either and was hoping for a miraculous decrease in cutoff.

Come on Queens, start sending emails!

Are you hoping that they drop their writing score down to Q like I am? lol... ahhhhh the perils of a VR 10, WS Q MCAT score...

Actually I am not worried about MCAT for Queens and UWO (12/11/11/R), but my cGPA is borderline (3.69) because 1st year hurt me badly.

Wow the cutoff went up pretty high.

I forget, these e-mails just let OOP students know that their files have or have not been sent for complete file review, correct?

Thats correct. If you are in the top ranked group of OOP applicants then they will actually read the rest of your file...if not they don't even bother.

I actually moved to Alberta this past year for this very reason. Had a full file review at U of C last year and scored a 71. OOP cutoff was around 72 for interview but for in province was only a 66. Seems like OOP applicants only have a shot if your GPA is like a 4.0

I haven't heard either way but I think my score is over the cut-off. Did anyone get a positive email?

Need more than a 4.0... apparently... MCAT scores really hurt sometimes. Good luck to everyone with their other applications! Maybe all these super applicants will take Calgary and leave us spots elsewhere!? :)

I made the cut but no email.

these "super" applicants are not necessarily super every where... i got cut at McGill. it seems like I have best shot at schools that weigh MCAT in some way in their evaluation.

Count another one for the OOP smackdown. Does anyone know if they give us OOPs any information aside from our cutoff score?

This is all for OOP "progression to full file review" right? And actual interview invites won't be sent until February sometime?

Jojef

Yep, that's right. Interview invites for both OOP and IP are out sometime in February I think.

I don't think they will, Jojef. They haven't done a full file review yet, so all they've seen is your MCAT and best 2-year GPA. You should be able to calculate your score yourself rather than wait until Monday.

Precisely. For everyone who hasn't gotten an e-mail yet, just calculate your score. Save yourself from any heartache.

Hi ssd,

From the applicant manual it looks like last year they interviewed 127 OOP students out of the 250 selected for a full file review (out of about 1,000 total OOP applications). They accept roughly 25 students that are OOP.

Wow I didn't even know so many people were cut before a full file review. Really makes you realize that a lot of students aren't doing their homework on OOP applications (I can understand applying if you're around 440, but there are surely people with far lower scores that apply).

Note that the qualifications for interview now change dramatically from the "file review" score. MCAT is much less important, cumulative GPA (rather than best 2 years) is far more important, and activities/references now matter.
Where did you get the 1000 from?

hey, sorry to hear about all the oop rejections. I am oop and I think I made the cutoff (omsas gpa 3.97, 14bs and 10vr ~ 464) but I have no idea where they notify you. do they send you an email? or is it in your appl status?

They will notify you, according to the FAQ. Just wait for it.

For anyone who didn't see this... The link is somewhat inconspicuous. Its from the website, click on the link at the top ("click here") for last years stats
http://www.ucalgary.ca/mdprogram/prospective/admissions/refstats/0910

Its a presentation of the scores:
924 OOP apps, 250 were reviewed, 127 interviewed

The mean pre file review score was 431, while the cut off has been >450 the past few years...so more than half of the applicants were either hoping for a good MCAT score or didn't do their research...

first time applying..

rejected.. though being sent for full file review wud've been a miracle... but still kinda sucks :$

best two year gpa: 3.75
mcat: 8 vr and 10 bs

wonder if i shud still consider moving to calgary next year and reapplying...

anywayz, merry christmas all!:)

You will most definitely need to move to Alberta to have a shot at calvados (unless you rewrite mcat).

Really, an 8vr kills your chances unless you have a 15 BS to accomodate.

Larrivee

well you can be happier than if you received an email saying that you aren't getting full file review.

LETSDOTHIS!
12-20-2010, 05:54 PM
Even a 15 BS isn't enough to meet the cut-off with an 8 in VR (and a 4.0). :(

Not to reveal too much about myself... haha I actually had a 6 VR last round of UofC interviews... I am IP and got an interview. I have rewritten my MCAT since, but point of the matter is that if someone truthfully wants to study in Alberta and decides to move here... and has good ECs... you may be able to get an interview... just dont mess up on the interview... its do or die.

Mithril is right regarding an OOP applicant which the initial poster is, but if he/she chooses to move and becomes IP in Alberta... it would make the ordeal easier. The MCAT isn't the end of the world, looking at the stats from the interview last year... you need to nail the interview to get in if you dont have a "Mithril-LIKE GPA"... but judging from recent literature, Canadian medical schools are slowly pulling away from the MCAT and looking at their interviews to reveal more about the applicant... so beware and keep your chin high.

while I realize estimates will be almost totally useless, anyone care to venture a guess at the probability of an OOP, who has made the first cut, gaining acceptance (taking into consideration declined offers)? of course for this kind of estimate we are considering all applicants equal in application and interview (which, obviously is incongruent with reality).

xIcewind

I don't know how long the waitlist is, but it generally goes pretty deep for OOP.

Larrivee
12-21-2010, 02:40 PM
With odds like those I probably don't stand a chance, especially as a third year applicant... but if I get an interview at Calgary I will be content. It's definitely my second choice (UBC is my first, and fortunately they don't make you wait so long to find out about interviews).

I am out of province and my score isn't posted yet on my application.. :(

I think their method for screening OOPs is a little odd. I mean, I advanced to full file review, but only because they only look at 2 year GPAs... now that it's cGPA, I doubt my 3.67 stands much of a chance in the OOP pool.

I mean, I guess they need a way to cut down the workload because they get so many applicants, and they're going to get a solid incoming class regardless, I just can't help but feel that I applied to Calgary and have no real chance of admission, but took a full file review spot away from someone with maybe a nice balanced 3.8 who would have actually had a chance to get in.

Juicy.Fruit

im sure u r not the only one in such situation. Everyone's cGPA will be lower than their best 2 years (unless they got same gpa across 3-4 years...).

Now, the drop may vary person to person but also our non-academic score will vary person to person.

It looks like half of the people get an interview so as long as you got strong ECs, there is still plenty of space for ppl with relatively low cGPA to grab an interview spot.
