What is a credit hour?

Ok did a search but couldn't find anything that made it clear for me.

Could somebody please explain what a credit hour is. My school you get 1/2 a credit per course. If a school says you need 6 credit hours in English what does that represent in courses taken?

This has been bugging me for a while that I couldn't figure it out so I thought somebody here surely knows the answer.

3 credit hours=1/2yr
6 credit hrs=full yr
8 credits hrs=full yr with lab
as far as i know.

Depends on the school. Manitoba schools don't give extra credit hours for classes with labs. So a full year course, lab or not, is 6 credit hours. Same for half year courses (3 credit hours, regardless of whether there's a lab)
