I'm from U of A and trying to set up a summer elective in family med at UBC. Does anyone have any helpful suggestions? I know UBC is generally hard to get, but are there clinics that are 'less busy' where I would be more likely to find a place?
You'll probably have a hard time setting up an elective between June and Aug, because that's when all the 2nd year UBC students do their mandatory 4 week Family Practice rotation. The Department of Family Med is usually fairly protective of the preceptors they have during that time, mostly because they're usually short preceptors for students!
If you can, try and set up an elective before June. Also, the department usually directs students to http://www.med.ubc.ca/education/md_ugrad/clerkship_electives.htm when applying for electives - they frown on 'private arrangements' (at least for UBC students, anyways!)
Good luck.
