Electives after first year

Just wondering if any 1st or 2nd yr students could tell me about the electives that occur in the first summer during 1st year. I was hoping to go to Australia for the 4 weeks, is that possible, have people done that?? Also do we have any breaks in the winter? NYE or Christmas??
