hello,

i'm just beginning to set up some electives right now and am not sure how to go about it. would it be unwise to do all electives in one specialty even if one is certain what she wants to specialize in? furthermore, should electives be set up only at schools that one'd be interested in doing clerkship in? would be impossible to get interviewed/matched at a school at which you didn't do an elective? some schools don't allow visiting students to complete electives in certain specialties; ie. Mcmaster & Pediatrics.

any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Usually you do electives at schools you're interested in for residency and in the program they're interested in.

UWO allows only 3/4 electives in one specialty. . . but I do know exceptions have been made in the past, when students have been particularly 'persuasive.'

Prior to our class's match, I would have though most people matching to competitive specialties would have done so in centers where they did an elective. Apparently that is not always the case - I had classmates match to some choice specialties without doing electives in those locations.
