Terms for Rural Return of Service?

I am sure that many of you have heard the stories of people who have their schooling paid for by a small town in return for a contract of service in their community. Sounds a little too "Northern Exposure" to me! Is there any validity to these claims? Could anyone tell me how to go about finding these communities?

<pagetext>This is somewhat of a rhetorical question since I'm sure most of you have thought about this before. Still, I'm interested in the opinions of people that frequent this forum. Medicine can be a hard life. After med school, the residencies are particularly brutal and many relationships have failed because of it. The hours are long and the pay is relatively weak (~$36,000/year for 1st year resident). Unlike a job with a company or the government, physicians do not receive a pension, let alone health benefits. Besides the job security, how do these "sacrifices" justify your decision to pursue medicine in the end? Med schools preach about maintaining a balance in your life, but in my opinion, the system hasn't drastically changed to reflect these attitudes. A 30-hour day doesn't do wonders for the home life. So why are so many people interested in medicine?

<pagetext>Hi, how much can a doctor trained in the U.S expect to make during his residency. Also, how much does a doctor make after. A general bare minimum and maximum would be helpful I understand that it does depend on many factors. The reason I pose the question is because I have been accepted into medical school in the states and want to know if I will be able to pay back my loans....eventually.
