Hi all,

Here's a quick questionnaire regarding the admissions process at UBC. We ran this questionnaire last year, and I'd like to keep it going on an annual basis so we can generate some profiles of applicants who have been accepted, rejected, or placed on a waitlist for each school. If you are applying this year, please take a few minutes to fill out the below questions. :)

Please keep all replies focussed as answers to the below; I will delete any non-answers in this thread. If you have any questions, please start a new thread so that this one stays on topic. Please check out the big thread in the General Premed Forum as well to let us know which schools accepted you, and which ones waitlisted you or rejected you: pub125.ezboard.com/fpremed101frm0.showMessage?topicID=648.topic (http://pub125.ezboard.com/fpremed101frm0.showMessage?topicID=648.topic)

If you can copy and paste the below form, and fill it out, that'd be awesome. If you want to contribute your GPA and MCAT stats in addition, that's great too. :)

------

I'm a (Province) resident in (undergraduate or graduate) studies. My GPA was (XYZ) and my MCAT scores were:

Physical Sciences: (x)
Verbal: (y)
Biological Sciences: (z)
Written Sample: (z)

I was (accepted/rejected/waitlisted) by UBC. This is my (first/second/third/more than third) time applying to this school.

Of all the schools I applied to, I'd like to attend (XYZ Med School) as my first choice.

maybe he's not talking about the well known Princeton in the states but the one in Europe. I heard that one was rivals Oxford and Cambridge as one of the top schools.

Yeah, and the top medical schools in Europe aren't Oxford and Cambridge. Stop being so Anglo-centric. They're La Sorbonne (Paris. . . btw it's a city in France. I'm kind of wondering if some of the people posting in this thread realize that :) ) and Heidelburg (Germany,) at least according to the Gourman report. Of course noone here cares about such rankings. . . Europe has just brought in new regulations allowing doctors trained at any school in Europe to work in pretty much any hospital in Europe, language dependent. Or so I've been told.

Seems that someone is getting their ideas of which schools are best from pop culture.

Also, anyone serious about US medical schools or US universities in general knows that its

JohnS Hopkins University

Often mistakenly called John Hopkins by the unknowing.

PGmed,

Are you a health care professional? how can you be a medical missionary? What did you do in those countries?

PGmed
06-10-2004, 05:41 PM
No, I am not a health care professional. At the time I was just a pre med student interested in medicine. I got involved in medical missionary work by directly contacting Doctors who are actively volunteering overseas.

My first trip to Guatemala was an extension of a two week tour with Y.W.A.M. During that tour I met a Canadian doctor running a rural clinic. The conditions of the clinic were insane. I stayed on for the next three months doing mostly triage. I learned a lot of medicine, but it was a crazy experience. I was in way over my head.

Two years later I got on with S.I.M. as a short term missionary. I spent four months in Bolivia in their “medical elective program”. This program is intended for med students, and typically American med students get credit for this. In Bolivia I spent the first two months with an Australian pediatrician who was starting up his own urban practice. I then spent the next two months with an American Family Doctor who was servicing an extremely remote area in the Bolivian highlands. In both these situations I was treated like a student; I shadowed these doctors, performed vaccination clinics, assisted with house/village calls, and helped out with the government required paper work. It was much more of a study experience then it was a work experience.

This past year I volunteered with Faith in Practice, and worked in the OR of Hermano Pedro Hospital in Antigua, Guatemala. I assisted surgeons and specialists who were visiting from the states. Faith in Practice is an American organization which staffs this hospital with specialists from the states. The specialists form teams of health care workers which each come down for a one week stay. The teams consist of Surgeons, Anesthesiologists, Scrub tecs, and recovery nurses. The teams rotate in such a way that the hospital is always fully staffed. I assisted teams of general surgeons, orthopedic surgeons, ENTs, OB/GYNs, and plastics. Typically there is way more demand for surgery then the team can ever satisfy. Thus the surgeons take advantage of any one who is willing to assist, so that each surgeon can then maximize a surgical theater. It was an amazing learning experience. I started of by just holding, retracting, and driving the laparoscopic cameras, but by the end I was doing much more.

Brian.

shrimp
06-11-2004, 01:24 AM
wow! I really admire that you had so many wonderful experience! I wonder if all of them were volunteering work....or did you get paid? Honestly, after graduation, I don't have money to travel and do months of volunteering work. Therefore, I can only join local volunteer programs.

PGmed
06-13-2004, 07:53 PM
Hey Shrimp.

All of my overseas work was volunteer, and I had to pay my way. But because of my experiences I received tax breaks and some scholarships which were based on my volunteer work. Surprisingly, it is not as expensive as you would think. Living expenses in a third world country are very cheap. However, if staying in the home of a missionary, it is customary to pay a room and board fee.

Some Christian organizations such as S.I.M. assist you in fundraising for missionary work. They would prefer it if participants did not use personal finances to fund their work.

Brian.

Thought I'd help keep the tradition going.. hehe seems like everyone is gonna get their acceptances/waitlist/rejection letters soon
so.... here it is cut and pasted from one of Ian's posts from a while back.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Please check out the big thread in the General Premed Forum as well to let us know which schools accepted you, and which ones waitlisted you or rejected you: pub125.ezboard.com/fpremed101frm0.showMessage?topicID=648.topic

Hey everyone,
congrats to everyone who got in... To those who are waitlisted/rejected, do not give up hope. Persistence goes a long way.

As for my stats... it'll leave you wondering why I got in.. :S

I'm a (BC) resident. I got my BSc in 2004 (major=psych, minor=philosophy). My overall GPA was (77.7%), Last 60 credits GPA was (80.2%), and my preReq GPA was (73%) and my MCAT scores were:

Physical Sciences: (8)
Verbal: (9)
Biological Sciences: (10)
Written Sample: (Q)

I was (accepted) by UBC. This is my (third) time applying to this school.

Of all the schools I applied to, I'd like to attend (UBC Med School) as my first choice. UBC is the only Canadian school I applied to (this is pretty obvious with my gpa/mcat scores and my OOP status for all other schools).

Yes, UBC does put a lot of emphasis on ECs and Interview, both of which I feel like I did a good job of. And.... I think my persistence paid off especially because I was able to portray it to them during my interview. Don't lose faith, keep trying if this is really what you want to do and where you want to do it.

Also, to answer the question of a previous thread (long ago)...YES you can get in with a 78% avg and it is definately worth applying. I am proof of that. If anyone needs any subjective advice which comes with no guarantees, private msg me and I would love to give you my $0.02.

Congrats/Good Luck.

Obviously there were numerous flaws with my application, but could my selection of "no interest" for NMP and IMP in the site choosing section have contributed to my rejection? I understand they don't see my choices until offers are made though. I'm not saying this would apply to me, but say, hypothetically, if they have an applicant that chose "no interest" for NMP and IMP and there are no spots left for VFMP then what would they do with that applicant?

This is my second time apply. Last year, I was rejected because of a not so strong reference letter and my MCAT score. My prof said he would like to see me pursue a career in research in the letter; that gave me the flag. I aced last interview. 88% after scale 10/10 for recommendation.

This year, I am in the waitlist. Last year, the adm people told me to retake the MCAT and ask for another acedemic reference. I deligently followed their suggestions, but apparantly there are still problems in my application.

I still don't know why I am in waitlist this time. Maybe my MCAT score is still not high enough for them. Anyways, I hope I would never get to know the reason. I want to get in this year.

Non-Academic: Tons of leadership positions, lived in Japan for two years, lived in Mexico for six months working with doctors in a clinic, hospital volunteer, first-aid volunteer, volunteer fireman, music (piano, percussion), tons of sports (playing and coaching) - this has always been the stronger part of my application (2004: 18.4, 2005: 17.7, 2006: 20.4).

I had bad interviews in my second and third time applying (2004: 75.3 consensus, 5/10 recommendation, 2005: 75.95 consensus, 4.5/10 recommendation, 2006: must have been better).

I was a late bloomer, not wanting to do medicine until I finished my first undergrad (biology) - after living in Japan I tried to give medicine a try - boosted up my GPA by going back and then boosted my Non-Academic by volunteering tons (had already done a lot in my first undergrad). I've been a teacher while waiting.

I was always encouraged by those who got in with not so steller academic marks and MCATS (I love my pre-req GPA!) - so I encourage those people to keep trying - do whatever you can - and do great on the interview and you never know!

Accepted to VFMP! 1st choice & 1st application. So excited!!!

Mr. No Med
05-15-2008, 03:46 PM
Hi all, here's my story:

I graduated university with no clue what to do with life so I decided to pursue medicine. I spent 1 year taking the prereqs, appplied and left to travel. I returned from the travels for the interview but was not accepted. I don't have a contingency, so I travelled for the next year again.

I returned from travels for the interview but was again not accepted. This time had a contintengy, so I worked a great job for 1 year, had the interview in Feb, and was again not accepted (found out today).

Along the way I realized that I wasn't really cut out for medicine. I would probably be a good doc but not as good as many of you people who are much more dedicated, have better memories and are more genuinely compassionate.

I realized that my skills were my work ethic, my professionalism and my sharp mind. So this year I wrote the LSAT and will be attending UBC law in Sept.

I'm a little choked about not getting in but getting more excited about law - I may have mainly wanted to get in for ego gratification, and I think I'll make a better, more satisfied lawyer.

Hats off to all of you. I'm a strong student, got 95% on the MCAT and still got my butt kicked 3 years in a row. Stay strong in med, I hear it's one hell of a slog.

IP, 4th year, and I was accepted at UBC Vancouver. Congrats to everyone who applied and made it this far. I'm going to post my stats because I found it helpful to browse these stats in the past.

Just finished my BSc
MCAT: 34O
GPA: 3.98/4.00
Volunteering: Standard health care volunteering to explore medicine, average amount of non-medical related volunteering
Work: Various summer jobs including doctor's office filer, group home care aide, and now research
ECs: lots of sports and outdoor activities
Interview: went well

This is my second time applying - I was rejected post-interview at UBC and U of C my first time around.

Interviewed: 7 schools
Waitlisted: 3 schools
Accepted: UBC, U of A

I am super excited about being accepted at these two schools as they were my top 2 choices. I will likely be attending UBC in the fall.

Likewise, I agree with jsmooth about ostentaisiousness.

Just to give hope to all those in the same boat as me.

2nd year applying and finally got in.

Am a mature student with very average grades and very very very average MCAT score.

Grades aren't everything. They can't possibly be as I am living proof of this.

Best of luck.

While i admit that this can be interpreted as ostentatious, as an applicant with medium average competitive marks/mcat, I found reading these posts reassuring when I was applying. I like to think that I would post on this regardless of whether I was accepted, but had this not worked out I might have thought differently. that being said...

BA in poli sci. I grad'ed this year, but took 5 years to do it, with a semester off to freak out with CWY (which I cannot promote enough!).

OMSAS GPA: 3.78/4
MCAT 290 8P 10V 11B
ECs: Worked part-time throughout school, and had a bit of clinical/lab/resume padding volunteering, but mostly volunteered where i had fun, which started at the food bank and then lead to hiv advocacy. Took a semestre off to do CWY, and spent a summer abroad in india. Other summers were spent in crappy jobs, having fun, doing some endurance races.

I am typing this up to help future applicants to UBC Medicine, especially those with a low VR score. I still remember the anguish of receiving a lower than desirable VR score and having to worry about it all the time because it could be a potential red flag at UBC. But here is a successful anecdote.

I have been accepted to the VFMP on May 15, 2008.
I was "good"-waitlisted by Ottawa. I will be attending UBC in the fall.
I'm a BC resident (IP). First time applicant.
Co-op + Fourth year applicant at UBC.
GPA: 90% overall (1st year 86.6%, 2nd year 92.6%, 3rd year 90.5%)
MCAT: PS 13 VR 7 (yea I know), BS 14 WS O

*My VR score is probably the highlight of the usefulness of my profile. I moved to Canada when I was 14, so English is my second language. My first year english marks at UBC are both 70% (B-). Publication-wise I only have one research poster. The advice I can give to those with a VR score of 7 or even maybe 6 (Kuantum has been accepted with a 6) is that you need to spend time polishing your essay and descriptions of your activities. In addition, I felt pretty confident that I have demonstrated effective communication skills during almost all (except perhaps for the first station didn't do so well) of the MMI stations.

Hope this helps and best of luck to all future applicants!!!

Accepted in province at UBC to VFMP.
(Waitlisted at Queens)

I want to share my stats because they are pretty mediocre (academically) and I think its encouraging to those of you who didn't make it this time.

BSc in Honours Biophysics, MSc in Pathology
Overall gpa ~78%, Last 60 ~81%
MCAT: 32R
EC: (this is the part I'm pretty proud of)

This is my third application and the first time I recieved an interview from UBC.

I really struggled in my undergrad degree. Actually I nearly failed some three or four courses. But kept at it and did alot of things to improve myself that really I'm proud of. It's been an amazing learning process all around and I'm a better person for having had to work so hard to finally get in.

There has been some debate about this so I'll just put my two cents in now... I've been so glad that I did a MSc degree. It was such a great experience least of all for what it did to my med application.... I contributed to cancer research in a small but definite way and I'll always have this to look back to.

I've heard from so many that one of the best part of med school is the fantastic people you meet so I'm really looking forward to getting to know everyone in the fall.

Hi everyone!

For those of you having doubts about the academic aspects of your application, I hope that my stats will encourage you to try again!

Accepted into VFMP on May 15, 2008 (BC resident/first time applicant).

GPA: 69/84/79 pre-req/60/overall (didn't really care in my first degree with TWO "F"s)

MCAT: 38P (14BS/13PS/11VS) (although the MCAT is apparently not heavily weighted at UBC?)

Non-academics were my strong point.

Applied to UBC and UofT (nada) in Canada but accepted to schools in Ireland and Australia.

I hope this helps! I just wanted to show everyone that initial bad grades should not discourage you from pursuing your dreams in med!

Good luck everyone... :)

Being able to read similar stats of accepted applicants on this thread provided me with a lot of encouragement and hope especially since I didn't have a good academic standing (low average, failed courses). I am IP and was accepted into VFMP.

My stats are:
1st application (during my 4th yr)
Overall GPA: 75 Last 60: 80 pre-req: 71
MCAT: 26P 9/7/10 (PS/VR/BS)
AQ: 17 NAQ: 18.36 Overall score: 35.36 - Rejected Pre-interview

2nd application (after completing degree):
Overall: 79 last 60: 88 pre-req: 71
MCAT: 32N 10/10/12
Non-academics were my strong point. Although I didn't have much hospital exposure such as volunteering in wards, etc., I was very much involved with other community organizations and used my essay to tie in my motivations for community involvement, etc. I think my essay and NAQ list complemented each other well and were the strong point of my applications.

Having low grades is def. a hurdle but certainly can be overcome. I know how stressful it can be to apply with grades that are not on par with other applicants but I think instead of having regrets about low AQ, concentrate on your NAQ and finding out what kind of person you are. Have a lot of people read your EC's and essay and see what they think. I'd be more than happy to help since I recieved a lot of help from many people on this forum as well.

Goodluck everyone.

Well I am out already. It must be a new record. I calculated my average fifty different ways and was sure I was over 70, but apparently I was wrong.
In the letter I was directed to their website where they say, due to stats, people with averages below 75 rarely get an interview so they won't even review the file.

I have been banking on my NAQ stuff to get me in, but if they won't even look... According to my calculations I need 90+ on my next ten courses to bring up my overall average to 75!!! (I failed two courses two winters ago, bioc300 - which I took concurrently with biol190 - and had no other base for except a 85% from college in second year biochem - the other was first year chemistry I was taking by correspondence. The final for chem was within two days for midterm for biochem and my 8mo. daughter had been very sick - and stuff at home....) so, one bad week and three years into this and I am finished!

Needless to say, I am feeling quite distraught because like you all I really want to be a physician. I even took my application to the nursing school and they are telling me there are no spots until 2010.

Monica
12-04-2008, 04:28 PM
I just wanted to add. I checked with them on how they convert "F".
you guessed it "0" - In one of those courses I had an 85% in course work (40%) and I only failed the final by 2% - it was a must pass the final course.

I think it is total garbage that they do not publish their marking scheme for percentages. That happened to a friend last year who was trying to come back from a poor first degree. She had calculated her percentage the best she could and counted 72% overall. She called to make sure and they told her "too bad we can't tell you". Why don't they want students to know whether they are even eligible to apply? Well turns out they gave her a nice 69% and a very condescending letter that said "if you had read the website you would have known that the minimum requirement was 70%." She DID read the website and she called! She would not have wasted the time, energy, money and stress if she knew she was under 70%. Why keep that scale from the students?

Good luck to those of you who got interviews this round! I just thought I'd post my stats to help out those of you who are thinking of applying or who are in the painstaking process of applying this year. These posts were helpful to me so hopefully my post can be of help to you.

This was my second time applying (First try as a third year: UBC Waitlist).
I successfully applied in 2008 cycle as 4th year in-province.

Overall OMSAS GPA:3.69
MCAT: 36 R (13 BS; 13 PS; 10 VR)
Prerequisite Average: 86%
Overall Average: 82%
Interviewed: UBC, Queen's, University of Western Ontario (UWO), U of T, University of Washington in St. Louis
Accepted: UBC, UWO
Waitlisted: Queen's, U of T, University of Washington in St. Louis

Activities: I was super involved both on-campus and off-campus in the local community throughout undergrad (I remember calculating that I averaged about 25 hrs of additional non-academic related commitments a week throughout the four years -- on top of a full load of classes/labs). In summers I worked non-medicine-related jobs that helped to pay for school.

==> Most useful piece of advice re: "activities": follow your interests! Also don't feel pressured to pay for international volunteer activities that may be out of your reach financially -- there are so many opportunities to get involved and to make a positive difference locally.

Good luck with the interviews and the application process...and don't forget to smile on interview day!

I only applied to UBC this year. IP, Accepted to the Vancouver Fraswer program.

I told myself if I don't get in this year, I gonna buy a house and give up my dream of becoming a doctor.

here is my stats:

BSc Biochem honours, BEd, Diploma in Counselling (I'll quit applying for my master program in counselling; I didn't tell Admission committee about my plan of enrollment in the master program; I guess I don't have to n'wyas)

Last 60: 87% (after finished courses up to this may)
OGPA: 84%

MCAT: 14,10,14

Non Acedemic & Employment:
Teaching, Coaching, Snowboarding, Scuba Diving, Life Guarding, Sailing, Wind Surfing, Hiking;

Sports: basketball and baseball

club exec for sports, referee for basketball games, ABA Therapists for autistic children, snowboard instructor, lab technician, sales/a manager for a granite company, Undergrad TA at UBC in computer science and math

Undergrad scholarships, three related publications, Service Awards from UBC hospital

travel exp- close to none- only being to the states and Taiwan

Things I have added in this cycle:

Volunteer in the Crisis Line.

I was informed by the commitee two years ago about my lack of volunteer exp in my application. I didn't start doing volunteer until last round of waitlisting, but i guess my volunteer work made a difference this time.

Although I hate doing things without any financial reward, I have to say that my experience at Crisis Line is fantastic and I plan on doing it after I'm studying in med. All years of waiting changed my attitude about volunteering. This process forced me to start volunteering; I have actually enjoyed doing it.

I am a 3rd year IP applicant.

Grades:
pre-req: ~86% overall: ~84% last 60 same as overall

MCAT:
verbal: 9
bio: 12
phys: 13
S

Extracurriculars:
Hospital volunteering/working, lots of sports, leadership positions at school, and tons of "unique" life experiences.

Interview:
I thought it went horribly!

Seriously, I thought third year applicants had to have amazing stats to be accepted. Anyways, it shows you that anything is possible and it's definitely worth it to apply even if you don't think you have a chance!

EDIT: if anyone wants help on their application I would be happy to help!

So is everyone who is posting in the 3.90+ GPA out of 4.33 or are there some people who are actually getting that out of 4.00? Just so that I am clear, sorry if I sound like a rookie

In province:

Overall GPA:~86
Last 60: ~84
MCAT: B: 14 P:11 V:11 W: N

Accepted: UBC, Calgary, U of T, Wollongong (don't ask)
Still waiting for U of Manitoba's response.

EC: Extensive community development work (volunteer and work), spent 2 years backpacking everywhere minus Antarctica, musical background, no published research.

Interview: Definitely didn't feel it was anywhere as strong as my other interviews. In fact, it was hands down the worst. At one point when asked about ethics, I said..."ummm 'cause it's bad".

Other thoughts: This is my 3rd time at age 23. I was waitlisted @ UBC the 1st time, rejected outright the 2nd and accepted in all the schools I wanted in Canada this time. Don't rush into getting in seriously. I'm so glad I took the time off to grow up. I'm at a stage where I feel like I won't be trading in my party hay-days for the sake of medicine 'cause those days are (somewhat) behind me finally.

4th year applicant, IP
Honours B.Sc at UofT
Applied: UBC, UofA, UofM, UofT, Mac, UWO
Accepted: UBC

didn't get an interview to anywhere except UBC and got in! I was extremely surprised and was already busy making backup plans!

CPGA: 84.5%
last 60: 84.3%
pre-reqs: 82%

MCAT: VR9, BS14, PS13, WSQ = 36Q

EC: lots of badminton, from high school to Varsity, coached and refereed badminton, managed lines for an international badminton tournament, Vice-president for residence council, 3 yrs of hospital volunteering, 3 years of research with numerous supervisors, 1 publication (after application), 1 year of mock surgical internship abroad, science journalist for JYI, executive member of a leadership/public speaking club, maybe a few more I cannot remember.

Interview: didn't have any other interviews to compare to but I thought I did really well when I came out of the interview, but people told me that would be a bad thing... take that with a grain of salt I guess!

I think the key to success is probably identifying how your extracurricular activities have contributed to improving the characteristics needed to be a doctor and really emphasizing those in your autobiographical sketch. Good luck to everyone still waiting and those applying next year!

4yr IP applicant, second attempt (last year only applied to UBC)
Graduated from ubc bioc this year

Overall: 91% average
Pre-req: 88%
last 60: 94%

MCAT: 14 BS / 11 VR / 12 PS / S

Applied: UBC, UofT, Queens, Mac, Ottawa, UWO, UofC, UofA
Interviewed: UBC, UofT, Ottawa, Mac, UofC, Queens, UWO
Accepted: UBC, UofT, Ottawa, Queens

I will be attending UBC!

ECs:

Research: 3 summers + part time in 4th year (not directed studies) (1 NSERC, 1 SSRP) – 3 publications: 1 first author, 2 second author

Major leadership role within large non-profit organization x 2years, hospital x 3years, big brothers x 2 years, club exec x 1year, little league baseball coach x 5 years, summer camp leader, and a bunch of other smaller things

Sports: many many intramurals (around 4-5 per year x 3 years), ran in 2-3 running events per year (including Vancouver Marathon in 2008, half-marathon twice before that)

Music: guitar and piano – nothing special, mostly self taught (no certifications)

Work: did a lot of tutoring, but most of my work was in summer under the research category

Hmm not sure if I am forgetting anything for ECs.

Interview: last year it was probably why I didn’t get in (read: did not practice :S) … I still think I am way better at the panel interview than mmi. Anyways, since then I practiced a lot and this year I felt my interviews were waayyyy better, which I feel shows by success I had post interview.

I wish everyone the best of luck!

Second time applying. Rejected pre-interview last year.

Overall - 80 something
Last 60 - Low 90s
Prereq - 78 yikes

MCAT 10P-10V-13B-QW 33Q

EC's - Every job under the sun from baker to construction to MCAT instructor to Vancouver Island Health Authority. Lots of volunteer stuff with my church, and with the QACCH. Some sports and outdoor stuff. Choir leadership. Fatherhood.

MMI - Loved it. Got right into it. A couple of stations I was reaching, but most went very well.

I honestly think my essay got me an interview and my interview got me in. But I guess I will never know.

Note to all. I failed half of orgo. Overall that year I had an F, a C, a C-, a C+ and a B+. After some soul searching I finally devoted myself. Three great years later and I have been accepted. It is truly a dream come true. For those of you staring at your transcript thinking no way, I say it can be done!

I have had so much help along the way and I thank everyone who knows me. You all helped me. I am truly just a product of the amazing opportunities that God and so many other people have given me.

Applied in Ontario in 2002 without success, completing Graduate Studies (PhD) at UBC in June.

MCAT: 10 PS 10 VR 13 BS Q (33Q, previous scores of 27R and 28Q)

GPA: Undergrad - 3.4, Grad - 3.8

ECs: St John Ambulance, Ski Patrol, Research Student in Coroner's Office, a few TAs, PBL Tutor for UBC MD, various other voluntary gigs.

-No peer reviewed publications at time of application.

No interviews at Dal, Mac, UoT, McGill, UWO, Ottawa, Queens. Had a good interview at UBC.

Keep at it for those who don't get in this year. I was ready to give up on the idea a couple years back, but realized it's my only passion in life. I'm 30yrs old now (married), so don't feel like you're too old to keep at it if you're still in your late 20s or early 30s.

I'm a IP, BSc in Biol. . My GPA was (78.4) and my MCAT scores were:

Physical Sciences: (9)
Verbal: (8)
Biological Sciences: (10)

I am waitlisted by UBC. This is my 4th time applying to this school.

Of all the schools I applied to, I'd like to attend UBC as my first choice.

I am a perfect example of why not to give up. I went back to school at age 35 to get my degree and have been applying since 3rd yr (Now 41 years old- no laughing...at least not harder than I am). I worked F/T shift work as a paramedic at 48 hr/wk while going to school F/T. Hence the lower marks. I may finally realize my dream so don't give up on yours!------

Overall: ~84% average
Pre-req: ~86%
last 60: ~85%

MCAT: 11 BS / 11 VR / 10 PS / N (don't ask)

BA in Psychology
Had just started at the time of application (and have now finished) an M.Ed. in Early Childhood Education

- Long-term volunteering at two different community health centres and as an RA for sexual psychophysiology research
- Volunteer experience with international students, as a leader for university orientations, and helping out with seniors and people with disabilities
- I grew up in a rural town of under 1000 people

Work:

- RA for rural health research
- Part-time nanny
- I actually couldn't include a lot of my work experience on the application because they didn't have verifiers for various reasons

Interview:

I prepared a lot and felt pretty good about my interviews (with the exception of a couple of questions!).

Stats:

Overall: 84
Last 60: 86

MCAT: 30, (10 across the board): P

I thought I would do something a little different than just post stats for future MDs. My apologies in advance if someone has already done this. The following is a two-stage, basic summary approach to get into UBC med school for those in province (OOPs need to increase the grade threshold to follow this plan):

A. Getting the interview:

1. Make sure that you really want to do this as a career and start on building professional relationships with those you would like to use as referees.

2. Get your grades up above the 80’s in the three categories that Adcom looks at. (N.B. A lower mark category isn’t the end of the world and can be buffered with a healthy NAQ).

3. MCAT – aim for 30 which is the median, (I know there’s been lower but this is the ideal game plan and higher scores are lovely too).

4. Look at the application early if possible, even if not applying this year, to see where you are strong and work on those weak areas. If lacking leadership opportunities, arts, sports get them started on. I emphasize that you have to do what you like to do and hope that you make a difference in people’s lives along the way, (you do not need a medical degree to do this). Aim for diversity in NAQ to show roundness, and maintain some activities to show commitment.

5.Spend time on your application, contact verifiers before submission and submit the application to get your interview.

B. Interview stage:

1. Depending on how you look at this, it is either the easy part or the hardest. You want to get into med school; then nail this part. Simple. There has been speculation in the past that this stage is a crap-shoot as no one really knows how much weight is given to the criterions post interview. I am willing to bet that at UBC the interview makes or breaks your chances and ask whether there has been past rejected applicants with an above average feedback on their interview. I doubt that there exist such applicants, unless the secondary considerations are seriously flawed, such as a low pre-req composite score below 75 or disastrous MCAT score, (if this is the case, concentrate on overcoming these barriers before worrying about the interview).

Congrats to class of 2013 and Good luck for those applying in the following years -ye shall prevail.

Raised money for children in Africa on World of Warcraft; Community center volunteering, high school tutor, part time jobs here and there, Summer Cancer research, and many many small things like MUG leader, Shinerama fundraiser, car wash, etc..etc... I'm a gamer, I play too much, dunno how I can survive med school... need to change my habits I guess :(

I always believed that "there is only one chance for grades and an infinite number of chances for ECs". My biggest advice is: Grades are still #1, no matter how great your EC, essay, resume, and interview score is, doing poor at school makes it very hard to compete. However, even with poor grades, a well committed person with the right attitudes will still make a great doctor. Good luck to all, and to all future applicants.

Reading the rejected applicants made me wonder if I ever get a chance. People with 19 and even 20 AQ and NAQ got rejected. I got 14.42 on my NAQ which I have no idea how to get even to 16. I did more stuff and got less marks.

They seem to respect people more with earlier achievement stuff that you do way back in universities than things that you do later in life to improve and It seems easier to get in if you know that you want to get into medicine early in life rather than trying to change course.

I don't understand why Andrea did not get in earlier. I mean her MCAT is a killer and she got so many achievements. Gnomey is another inspiring applicant. I felt horrible today but her story makes me feel somewhat better.

Congrats to Andrea and Gnomey!

Hmmmm.

mariepar
05-15-2010, 02:49 AM
I was quite stunned to see your list of activities....its really alot, and deserves to have a higher NAQ.
My only slight concern is that it is a bit random. For example, you've been a cook for 15 years (professionally?), been a motel manager, crew on tall ship etc. I know its great that you've tons of exposures...but it would be a good idea to somehow tie it all together to give you passion to apply for medicine.
That's what the personal essay was for; can't believe UBC is doing away with it this year (from what I've heard). And don't forget you're looking at my life in condensed form--there's trying to make a living while raising kids while living at marinas and logging camps etc--doing what it took to put food on the table, and it took a while to get a decent job as a professional cook. And for anyone who thinks cooking is irrelevant to medicine, let me tell you, it sure keeps you on your toes and you have to be efficient, organized and know what you're doing. And the workload was insane. Plus keeping 100 seniors (not to mention the nursing staff!) happy with the meals is not a task for the faint of heart.

Hey guys, I've been waiting to post this since Thursday! Accepted, 1st time applying, to the IMP (1st choice)!! I don't know what all my academic stats are, but I'm 26, married with a 21 month old baby boy, and don't have a degree (just finished 4th year without 3 prereqs for my BioPsych B.Sc, although I do have an honours diploma in Audio Engineering). I got a phone call while out at the park with my son and started jumping up and down, and then he joined in too! 34P on the MCAT and not a ton of extracurriculars, mostly fatherhood, playing guitar for a few years, skateboarding, music production/recording, research apprenticeship with the Centre for Aboriginal Health Research, community internship with Network Environments for Aboriginal Research BC, and intramural ultimate frisbee! So stoked! Can't wait to meet everyone and keep your heads up to all those who weren't successful this time 'round. If medicine is truly your dream it will become a reality if you keep at it.

Just got in off the waitlist, VFMP. Recent graduate from the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at UBC.

My stats (at the time of application)
Overall: ~86%
Last 60: ~83%
Prereqs: ~88%
MCAT: 36S (12BS/11VR/13PS)

EC's: Hospital volunteering (around 2 years), long-term senior home volunteering (9 years), UBC orientations (2 years - 1 as a Squad Leader, 1 as a Squad Manager), SUS for two years, overseas volunteering to China (first year summer), various summer research positions, Food Bank volunteering, self-taught guitarist in two bands, plus other small things.

Interview just kinda...went. Wasn't too morose coming out of it, but wasn't entirely confident either. I thought I did my best, but I felt it was hard to gauge my performance based off the limited feedback/response/reactions I got from the interviewers.

Cumulative: 3.8ish
Last 60: 4.0ish
MCAT: 33P
Extracurriculars: Research assistant for ~1 year, international volunteering, school exec, various clubs, one publication, softball, hospital/school volunteering....

So incredibly psyched. Will be accepting. Praise God.

2nd app

I did nothing over the past year to improve the app other than reword/reorganize the NAQs, add an award I missed, and improve my essay (and subsequently introduce a typo in the first paragraph).

Last year:

AQ: 20.8
NAQ: 16.33
Interview: Average

GPA: 80-81
GPA last 60: 82-83
GPA prereq: 84
MCAT: PS 9, BS 10, VR 10, W O

Undergrad Comp Eng.
Masters Elec Eng.

Overseas volunteer 6 months (health informatics for an NGO), hospital volunteer 5 months, various rec sports player/organizer, handful of first author pubs, patent, travel, rural background, professional work experience as a senior engineer, research work experience, french, have my own consulting company (sounds more impressive than it is), mentored a couple of undegrad and masters thesis students while working for the university.

References: graduate advisor (high ranking Prof), my current CTO, a family doctor

My essay was good. It's not rocket science. This is why I want to do this, this is what I've done to prepare, this is why the field needs me, the end. Short and sweet with a pop, leave them wanting more.

I felt my app overall was strongish on the ECs despite being scored low last year, so the score surprised me. But I think by reorganzing it this year I got extra points. Overall my app is not above average, I just fit in. Clearly my Academics and MCAT are just adequate. Statistically I am probably near the bottom 200 for VFP in terms of my scores so it was all on the interview. This year I had no bad stations. I thank my two friends for pushing me hard to practice and it paid off for all of us. Yay!

I'm a BC resident in undergraduate studies. My overall GPA was 79% and my MCAT scores were:

Physical Sciences: 9, Verbal: 9, Biological Sciences: 9, Written Sample: S

I was accepted into the VFMP at UBC. This is my second time applying.

Last time I applied across Canada and this time I applied only to UBC and Ireland Schools. Received acceptance in RCSI and now UBC, of course, I accepted UBC :)

Last year, my score was NAQ: 17.85 and AQ: 16.8 and I was rejected pre-interview. I'm pretty sure my AQ score improved this time around. I found that despite having done some practice for the MMIs, I was pretty nervous for the first 2 stations and then it got easier. I felt I did okay, not my best but also not my worst. I reworded my NAQ section and essay and made some adjustments in hours.

ECs: Emergency Dep't Volunteer 4ish years, a lot of community events organization (human rights campaign, blood drives, summer camps, heart and stroke fundraisers, conferences, etc..), president of an ams club for a year and highly involved in 1-2 clubs, martial arts 10 yrs, ams speakeasy, overseas volunteer 6weeks in orphanage, etc...

Congratulations to everyone who was accepted! I look forward to meeting you all. And good luck to those who are waitlisted or will be applying again. Perservere!

I'm a BC / in-province resident in graduate studies (medicine) internationally. I'm just about to start clerkship, but I figured I'd give it one last shot because I'd really prefer to practice in Canada, not the US.

My GPA was 76% for overall, pre-reqs, and last 60. MCAT was PS - 10 VR - 11 BS - 10 WS Q (32Q). AQ was 15.7 and NAQ was 19.30. I attended paramedic school and had a 4.0 GPA there, but at a college so not recognized by UBC. I'm attending medical school at Saba University now; my last 60 credits from here is 88%. My shelf exam scores for all the major medical subjects has been anywhere from a low of 80th percentile rank for anatomy to 99.6th percentile for physiology and 99.2nd for pharmacology, and 98th for behavioral sciences (percentile ranking is compared to US medical student performance on the shelf exams). Clearly that didn't factor into my AQ score, which is too bad.

My NAQ activities were hospital ED for 4 years, St John Ambulance for 5 years, paramedic for 2 years in rural BC + downtown eastside of Van, some publications, lots of shadowing with different physicians and specialties, tutoring, music awards, martial arts, intramural sports, travel to Europe and SE Asia, etc.

This was my second time applying and unfortunately I was rejected pre-interview. I will continue my education out here and hope for the best. Anyway, congrats to all those who were successful and best of luck with your education at UBC. :)

Don't want to give away too many details, but:

25/25 AQ
Almost 18/25 NAQ

Rejected post interview.

Not hopeful this year since they are changing the AQ formula, tossed out the essay (which I believe was the strength of my application). Besides, NAQ is always a crapshoot. Some people here have a better list of experiences yet end up with 14.

I have a friend that ended up with less than 11 and it was totally undeserved.

Rejection is tough to go through, even if you're applying as a third year :P. Doesn't help that I know more third years that got in (by a lot) than were rejected.

Rejected. Thought I would contribute to the body of knowledge over here.

IP

Pre-reqs: 75%
Overall Average: 78.5%
Last 60: 81%
MCAT: 31S

AQ: 6.47/25
NAQ: 15.74/25

Extra-curriculars:
- 3 publications, 1 poster presentation
- 1.5 years as emergency room volunteer
- heavily involved in clinical research at the BC Cancer Agency in Vancouver; employed as a researcher and work alongside oncologists
- 100+ hours with shadowing doctors and specialists
- lead a project in breast cancer research
- lab bench work in the characterization of tumor cells
- loads of hours volunteering in various hospitals and clinics (over 250 h)
- sports and music at a competitive level
- travel and tons of community service
- tutoring and mentoring to both university and elementary students

Anyway gave it my last shot (3rd attempt) but just not good enough for UBC. Quite frustrated at the fact that UBC is the way it is. Unfortunately because of my GPA I am afraid that I won't be able to ever get in unless I pursue another undergraduate degree. Good luck to everyone.

gluck to all those applicants who got accepted for an interview, and for everyone else, please remember that there are applicants in our current year and in year 2 who applied over 6 times before they earned their spot.

I realize that it is easier said than done but keep at it.

To those prepping for interviews, I look fwd to meeting everyone in Feb. I'll be the lucky one helping with the interview process.

Cheers!

P.S. any questions about interview prep or med school, dont hesitate to email me via private messages.

I had a lot of non-academic activities and I feel it must have been the strength of my application. My academic score wasn't particularly "competitive" (I even had two courses in the low 60s and few in the 70s).
I felt okay for the interviews, practiced a lot and didn't feel too nervous going in. Definitely feel that the interview is the dealbreaker. I'm guessing that I got an above average on the interview because I personally feel that I wouldn't have been accepted otherwise.
So here's to all of you who have GPAs in the lower end of the spectrum... don't give up! As long as you prove yourself on the interview and have decent non-academics, you're set to go.

I'm still happy to attend uOttawa, but I really wanted to stay at home and be near my family and friends. At least this will force me to be more independent and leave my bubble :p

Congratulations everyone. I would've loved to meet some of the people on this forum:)

Regrets - IP, quite disappointed, 3rd time applying and interviewing

Overall - 82.45% (10 year rule applied though it only added 0.4% to my average)
Last 60- 85.45%
Pre-req - 86.9%

NAQ - 18.04
AQ - 14.42

MCAT - 10/10/12/S

Interview - average - quite disappointed in this as I thought it went quite well.

Non-trad applicant; at 31 years old, I think I will only give this application one more kick at the can and then I am done.
I have a good career as a registered nurse, so I am not too distraught.
