Hi all,

Here's a quick questionnaire regarding the admissions process at Queens. We ran this questionnaire last year, and I'd like to keep it going on an annual basis so we can generate some profiles of applicants who have been accepted, rejected, or placed on a waitlist for each school. If you are applying this year, please take a few minutes to fill out the below questions. :)

Please keep all replies focussed as answers to the below; I will delete any non-answers in this thread. If you have any questions, please start a new thread so that this one stays on topic. Please check out the big thread in the General Premed Forum as well to let us know which schools accepted you, and which ones waitlisted you or rejected you: pub125.ezboard.com/fpremed101frm0.showMessage?topicID=648.topic (http://pub125.ezboard.com/fpremed101frm0.showMessage?topicID=648.topic)

If you can copy and paste the below form, and fill it out, that'd be awesome. If you want to contribute your GPA and MCAT stats in addition, that's great too. :)

------

I'm a (Province) resident in (undergraduate or graduate) studies. My GPA was (XYZ) and my MCAT scores were:

Physical Sciences: (x)
Verbal: (y)
Biological Sciences: (z)
Written Sample: (z)

I was (accepted/rejected/waitlisted) by Queens. This is my (first/second/third/more than third) time applying to this school.

Of all the schools I applied to, I'd like to attend (XYZ Med School) as my first choice.

HI!

I received my Queen's acceptance letter yesterday (along with one from McMaster). I am an Ontario resident with a Biomed degree and an (almost) one year M.Sc. Nutrition degree from Guelph.
This is my first time applying to med school. I haven't heard from Western or Ottawa, and I am on the waitlist at Calgary.

I think (?) my first choice is going to be McMaster, maybe Queens.

I finally received my rejection from Queen's. (Silly Queen's -- NO ALUMNI SUPPORT FOR YOU! :p )

Of all the schools I applied to, I'd like to attend the University of Manitoba as my first choice.

In true Queen's fashion, I was sent a rejection and an undergraduate award notification on the same day. I might have been deemed unworthy of being a physician, but at least I'm getting a plaque! :rolleyes

And really surprised because I thought my interview went great. I have a feeling one of my referees only filled out the form and didn't realize they were supposed to attach a letter. Would this be cause for a rejection? or would they have looked into that. Oh well, I'll probably never know.

Both degrees at McGill University, I applied last year and was rejected by all Ontario schools & McGill. I am currently working as a medical writer in a CME company and as a unit coordinator in a Montreal hospital. I'm waitlisted at Montreal, Dalhousie, and maybe McGill too.
My advice: Don't give up. I can hardly believe I've been accepted but I knew medicine was what I wanted to do and have worked towards it for the last five years. If I can get in with my 55 in OrgII, anyone else who really wants it can too. OK, I know, I'm being too verbose. Good luck to waitlisters and Congrats to others accepted.

Alright this is way late, but I'm stuck in England so what else is there to do?

Ontario resident

B.A. Economics, B.Sc. Human Bio, Doctor of Chiropractic degree. Undegraduate GPA 3.8 something.

MCAT VR 12, BS 12, PS 13, WS Q.

Generally though I don't think GPA and MCAt scores are that important for Queen's. Given the application process it's the "other stuff" that make or break you. My "other stuff" includes neuroscience research, being editor of my university paper, graduating as valedictorian, and various awards and extra-curriculars.

Queen's was my first choice, and after nail biting during the wait-list period I'm glad I got in:p

Signing off from London England.

Hope to see you all soon:o

I am an Ontario resident with a BSc (physiology) and MSc (pharmacology). My undergrad cGPA was 3.48 and grad GPA was 4.0 (although these are not the critical factors post-interview at Queen's).

Have been working at a hospital for 2.5 yrs doing clinical research and admin. Currently have 4 publications and 8 abstracts. Lots of volunteer work and extracurricular interests.

I was waitlisted at Calgary, but am thrilled to be attending Queen's!! This was my first time applying to this school.

Hey everyone,

This is my 2nd time applying (no interviews the first time around) and I have an undergrad from UWaterloo in Math and a MSc from Queen's in Computer Science. My first two years at UWaterloo were horrible, but I pulled things up in the the final two years and finished with a 3.6 cGPA. I have a grad GPA of around 3.8 with two published first-author papers.

MCAT: 12/12/10/Q (P/V/B/W)

ECs: Tons - anything that fancied me - from solar race cars to competitive running to soup kitchens.

I was accepted by Queen's and Calgary but waitlisted at UofT. I don't know where I'll go yet....

Accepted.

-GPA: 4 year cumm GPA of 3.64 (thanks to a dismal first year where partying trumped school). Last two years: 3.83
-MCAT: 37R (P:13, V:11, B:13) (I wrote it twice....first time I effed up Verbal)
-EC's: Various stuff but nothing stellar (ie: I didn't start a club, become a president of anything etc). I had a decent amount of medical research (no pubs), travel experience, sports, music, member of some clubs, self-directed stuff.
-Interview: I was really happy with it initially (as many are it seems). I tried to be as sincere as I could, and was honest about my weaknesses. But, as the time between then and now went on I thought the interview went worse and worse...Lesson: "Worrying is like a rocking chair, it gives you something to do but doesn't get you anywhere" (Van Wilder).

I graduated in May 2006 and was in a gap year. This is my second time applying.

I haven't heard from Western yet (probably waitlisted) and am waitlisted at Dal. I'll most likely be accepting at Queen's.

Best of luck to everyone else! If you're not accepted this year, keep doing things that you enjoy and work hard.

Congratulations Vector, we have the same decision to make - I was accepted at Queen`s and U. of M. (waitlisted at U. of C.). Congratulations to absolutely everbody. Indeed, even getting an interview is a rare accomplishment. If things do not work out as planned this year, be proud and know that you are still awesome and that the end is nowhere in sight. In life there are often dissapointments, but I believe there is a method to its madness. As for the stats that I am supposed to put up:

MCAT: 36P
GPA: 3.99 (of 4.0)
Degree: B.Sc. General (3 year degree) at U. of M.

ECs & Employment: A lot of tutoring, T.A. in Biology, Volunteer in Observation & Emergency Unit at hospital, Nursery worker & Sunday school teacher at my church, Fundraising through church... To be honest, I have almost no work experience (T.A. and call centers).

The Queen`s interview went great (took less than 30 minutes and we talked about movie screenplays). I was a lot less confident about the U. of M. interview (it took about 1h 10min and we also talked about screenplays). Yes, I am a film fanatic.

I wish everybody the BEST OF LUCK!!!

Extracurricular/job stuff: I pretty much did stuff that interested me or that I thought would be fun, so I ended up with a couple of activities/hobbies that were slightly unusual like flower arranging (which interestingly came up during my interview...) Kooky experiences aside, I volunteered in hospitals and briefly shadowed a doctor. I also got to be in a couple of what other people would call leadership positions.

Extracurricular/job stuff: I coached a youth basketball team, went on a mission trip to Belize with my church, volunteered at a nursing home, volunteered at the local hospital. I had an NSERC grant one summer as well.

I was getting ready to make plans for next year and then got the email. So happy right now!

I'm a New Brunswick resident. I have a BSc in Biochem and a MSc in Transplant Immunology. My undergrad GPA was 3.8 and my MCAT scores were:

Physical Sciences: 10
Verbal: 10
Biological Sciences: 10

I was accepted by Queens. This is my first time applying to this school.

I'm a BC/Alberta resident. My GPA was dismal for my first few years but got better, and my M.Sc. marks were 3.9. My MCAT scores were:

Physical Sciences: 10
Verbal: 12
Biological Sciences: 14
Written Sample: Q

I was waitlisted by Queens and U of C, but I just got into Queens off the waitlist. This is my second time applying to Queens, but I didnt make the cutoffs last year.

EC's/jobs/other stuff: worked as a lifeguard for 5 years, 2 years working for an optometrist, Graduate Student Society, volunteering for AIDS Vancouver, lots of other random things over the years.

Right now, it feels like a huge weight is off my shoulders. Unless Calgary calls me off the waitlist (my family is there), I will be joining you all in Kingston as part of MEDS2011!

Time to celebrate! Woo-hoo!

Cheers!

So happy to be posting this...

I have a Honours B.Sc. (specialty in molecular bio, major in chem, 2004) and a Master's degree in Biomedical Technology (1-year course-based program, 2005). Undergrad's last two years GPA was 3.81 (rounded down). Wrote the MCAT twice (2003 and 2006):

Physical Sciences: (11, 13)
Verbal: (11, 10)
Biological Sciences: (14, 12)
Written Sample: (M, Q)

Second time applying (applied in 2003/2004 cycle but rejected pre-interview). Got rejected pre-interview by UofA, UofT, rejected post interview by UBC, waitlist at UofC and Queens (accepted today by Queens!)

Extracurricular/job stuff: Worked part-time since I was 16 (cept for 1 yr) - about 4 years in retail, then in a lab for 2, worked summers in retail. Have been employed in the last two years as a Clinical Research Coordinator dealing with aspects of managing clinical trials in the cancer centre in Calgary (my clinical/hospital experience). My practicum with the master's program was writing up a clinical trial protocl for lung cancer. Aside from stuff done during high school (those that were in the application included dance/drama production, choir and volleyball), volunteered at the Science Centre in Calgary starting Feb '06 (~90 hours by the application deadline), played in volleyball leagues once a week since Jan '06

And yes, I re-studied for the '06 Aug MCAT (started last week of April '06), 2 years since my undergrad, while working full-time, volunteering bout 12 hours each in those months, volleyball once or twice a week and using the Kaplan review book and flew from Calgary to write the test in Vancouver as I had a family wedding to attend right after my exam! It was hard and exhausting (and I wouldn't recommend it) but do-able! :D

Good luck to all future applicants!

I'm an NB resident, and this was my first time applying. I have a B.Sc. (Honours biology) from Memorial University, with a 4.0 GPA. My MCAT score was 30P (10 in each section). Employment: 3 NSERC USRA's, two summers in a science museum. I was heavily involved in sports and music throughout undergrad, and spent my junior year studying in Massachusetts through a fellowship program.

I was accepted at Queen's, and rejected post-interview from Ottawa, Dalhousie, and Memorial.
See you in the fall!

I'm in!

I'm a BC resident. I haven't kept track of my grades too closely. Undergrad wasn't great, maybe 3.5 average. Grad school (MSc) 4.0 average. Both degrees from UBC. MCAT 11 11 10 S and 13 11 10 P.

The first time I applied for medicine was in 2000. I've applied and been rejected without an interview many times from many schools. Queens class of 2011 was the first interview I've had, and goes to show, you only need one!

See you all in the fall,

Hi everyone :).

I'm accepted! Congrats to everyone else who is in. For those still waiting - I really wish you all the best and hope things work out for you. I know how difficult it is to wait.

In case it's helpful to know, here are my stats:

2 years OMSAS GPA: 3.85
MCAT: 10 VR, 9 PS, 11 BS, R writing sample.
I had a range of extracurricular activities/volunteering/research... hospital, crisis centre, 1 publication, I worked a lot since high school.

I had felt the interview went well (mostly because the interviewers were sooo nice).

I have a Honours BSc and an MSc in pharmaceutical science, 2 peer reviewed journal publications, 11 peer reviewed online publications, professional management experience, and tons of medical research experience. Pretty wide range of extracurricular, no volunteer.

GPA: 3.5
MCAT: 10 - phys, 10 - bio, 11- verb, R

Applied to: Queen's, UoT, Western, Mac, Calgary, Dalhousie
Rejected pre-interview: UoT, Western, Mac, Calgary, Dalhousie
Waitlisted for Queen's

I'm gearing up to apply again, new MCATs, the works. Does anyone know how many people get waitlisted? Is it everyone who had an interview but didn't get an offer -- 300 people? Does anyone who had an interview get declined?

Can everyone please post their stats as well? Including cGPA and last 2.

My OMSAS overall GPA was 3.5-ish (including two years of engineering courses); 3.78 for my most recent degree, and probably mid-3.8s for my best two years.

PS 11 / VR 11 / BS 13 / WS S

Extracurricular activities: Interprofessional health student group, student government, intramural sports, volunteer @ fair-trade store, summer NSERC research, and lots of first-hand experience in hospitals and the community thanks to my undergrad and recent work experience as an RD.

I was accepted, but will be declining my spot to take advantage of McGill's cheaper tuition :)

I'm an Ontario resident who completed by Bachelor of Health Administration in Health Services Management at Ryerson University in 2004. I also have a Diploma in Emergency Health Services Management from Dalhousie University (2004). I have been working as a paramedic with Toronto EMS since 1999.

My overall GPA was ~2.0. My GPA from my most recent two years was 3.78. I wrote the MCAT three times in 2004-5, scoring between 26 and 28. In March 2007, I wrote the MCAT again scoring 32R.

I was accepted by Calgary, Alberta and Queens, just waiting for the missing Western email. This is my third (DONT GIVE UP!!) time applying to this school.

I applied to UBC, UofC, UofA, Western, Queens, UofT, Mac and Ottawa.

I was interviewed at UofC, UofA, Western and Queens.

Interviews went well, I thought, except UofA.

Of all the schools I applied to, I have NO idea where I want to go to school! Good luck to all on the waitlist!

I cannot believe I get to write this.

My first time applying. I applied to: Queen's, U of T, Mac, Ottawa, Western
Interviewed: Queen's
Accepted: Queen's

Undergrad cGPA: 3.04
Grad GPA: 3.95
MCAT: 29R
Publications: many (7-8?) first-authored in peer reviewed journals, tons of abstracts at international, national meetings
EC: a few decent ones

Interview: I thought I screwed up on some questions, but i guess not! They were really nice though.

I had a crummy undergrad and it's been a long road to recovery. But I can now celebrate my 30th birthday in med school!

Goes to show you that if you really want to become a doctor, you will make it eventually. Just don't give up!

All the best of luck to the rest of you waiting.

I got waitlisted for Queens, however I got accepted to U of C (my 1st choice).

Same thing as others who got waitlisted at Queens - I had a good but not overwhelming interview. I really didn't take very well to the questions that they were asking - they all kinda seemed to be asking the same thing. My whole interview involved the "describe a time when . . . . and how did you feel about it" type of question - at the end I felt like I had just been psychoanalyzed. I knew when I walked out the door that it didn't go well enough to get in.

Congrats to those who got into Queen's - perhaps we'll meet and swap stories at a medical mixer one day!

Today I was accepted off the waitlist. I will be accepting the offer. (although the "eeeekkk" thread makes me a little nervous that perhaps there's been a mistake, and the offer will be taken back!!)

Hey,

I was accepted on May 15th at 9:02:44 am, but have yet to write one of these with my stats and such. These posts really helped me out when I was applying, so here goes:

4th year applicant, 1st time applying
GPA ~3.8
I'm an arts student, with all of the basic sciences and minimal upper year sciences
MCAT 10/10/10/S
Extracurriculars: non-sciency research, two conference presentations, teaching assistant, hospital volunteer, women's health clinic volunteer for several years, leadership stuff at school, lots of volunteering with homeless population, camp, academic awards, community contribution awards

Hope this helps someone. I'm looking forward to Queen's!!

I was accepted off of the waitlist today and I'm ecstatic! Here's my info:

Graduated last year from psychology program, have been working as a psychology lab manager for the past year, 1st time applying

Applied to Queen's, Ottawa, Western, U of T, Mac & U of C
Accepted: Queen's
Waitlisted: Ottawa & Western
GPA: 3.83
MCAT: 11/11/12 S
Extracurriculars: lots of clinical psyc research experience through working and volunteering in 3 or 4 labs and writing thesis, random hospital volunteering (not too much though), dance club, exec for several years on spiritual group, working in daycare, etc.

It took me a LONG time to come to the decision to go into medicine instead of clinical psyc and I definitely felt out of place as an applicant because I wasn't coming from the typical life sci background. I say this because I want people coming from non-traditional academic backgrounds to know it is possible to do it!

I was accepted off the waitlist :)

I am a 3rd year applicant from the University of Toronto in a comparative physiology specialist program. My MCAT score was 35T, and cGPA is 3.93.

I worked at SickKids research for 2 years, research in biotechnology for one year, and I TAed biotech for a summer (2 papers in review, research award, grants). I am a first-aid training officer, medical-first-responder, and a regional director of MADD volunteering and fundraising. I have also done several years of hospital, church, tutoring, and women's rights volunteer work. I have done some public speaking for high schools and volunteer events.

Queens was the only school to interview me, but I'm really glad I got their offer! :D

Interview
I was really nervous and overcompensated by being too cheery (to hide my nervousness). Therefore, I don't think it went very well. I can't say that I'm surprised that I was wait-listed (if anything, I was expecting a rejection :p)

I was however, accepted at Western (my 1st choice!), and will be removing myself from Queen's waitlist. This is my first time applying to any medical school. Good luck to those still waiting to hear back :)

Hey 3.72 for the best two years, I guess that gives hope for people because it shows the cutoff for best 2 years isn't 3.78 or even 3.75 as previously suggested. Also, congratulations to everyone.

I've been lurking these forums for a couple of years now, and now I can finally help people with some useful info, I thought I'd post my stats as a grad applicant and give some people hope for future years.

Grad GPA: 3.85ish I think...
Grad productivity: some conference presentations, abstracts, no publications (I'm working on it, sooooon...), departmental and institutional fellowships

Undergrad GPA: 3.55 (Engineering)
Best two years: 3.6ish (not much better I know...)

MCAT: 34Q (11-11-12-Q), first time I wrote it was 32Q (11-12-9-Q)

ECs: In my opinion, nothing world changing, but I commit to activities for long periods of time - Research (4 years and counting, including my master's work), Hospital volunteering (2 yrs), youth counselor (6 years), student leader of professional society chapter in undergrad (3 years), youth convention organizer (3 years)

I had 1 Canadian interview at Queens, (Interviewed at two american schools as well, after to applying to about a thousand of them) and got off the waitlist on friday! I'll be attending Queen's!

Hey,

MCAT 11-physics, 10-verbal, 12-bio, R
cumulative GPA for 3 years (my calculated OMSAS value) - 3.91

Applied to all Ontario schools except NOSM
Interviewed at Western, Queen's and MAC
Waitlisted at all 3
Excepted May 29th at MAC, June 3rd at Queen's
Provisionally accepted Queen's recently.

Also, I made a point of doing no hospital volunteering (though if the question "how did you know medicine was for you" came up, hospital volunteering probably could have been helpful, but as you can see, every person on this forum does it so while it's good for personal growth, it doesn't set you apart). I worked with habitat for humanity which was more fun than anything else and great for communication skills, teamwork, etc. I built that up pretty hard and really advocate it to anyone. No house-building experience needed! A friend of mine asked me to tutor for his charity and I did that for two years, just an hour a week. I worked for a biotech. company in R&D doing ELISAs and worked with Hybridoma cells (truthfully boring stuff most of the time), and some other jobs, overnight camps. I did not go to Africa and save the world. I did not climb Mt. Everest. I did things I enjoyed doing (guitar, hockey, nutrition...) and would have been happy doing even if I never got into medical school after 1001 application cycles. That's my advice, so take it or leave it. GOODLUCK
